Factory ammo for a 44mag lever
« on: August 10, 2003, 02:27:48 AM »
As I said in my earlier post I just picked up a win 94 in 44mag. Can anyone recommend some factory ammo in both 44mag and 44special for this thing ? Obviously looking for something that known to fly well in these guns. Its the pack rifle with the 18inch bbl.

Thanks

Give PMC 180 or 240grs a try. They seem pretty hot for factory loads and have good quality brass for reloading. And they are cheap and come in boxes of 50.

cabin4,
I've had good accuracy from Remington 240 grain factory loads and Speer 270 grain Gold Dot factory loads.

I have been considering a lever action and checked out winchester web site but saw no mention of a pack rifle or one with a 18" barrel. Maybe there info is wrong but the 44s shown were 16",20" and up,is this a new model? !8" would be ideal for me.

The pack rifle with the 18" barrel was a special run about 2 years ago.  I bought a Trapper model that year, looking back I sure wish I had bought the pack rifle.

Jim n Iowa,

Have you considered the Ruger lever rifle?  It has an 18" barrel.  Unless you are looking for an exposed hammer and two-piece stock, of course.

i can vouch for what scott said. pmc is hot!   clocked at 1860 for 240 hollow points.  kicks pretty hard for a rifle that isnt supposed to.   i have been shooting 240 grain nosler soft points over 22 grains h110 in mine,  ran @1510 fps and was a whole lot easier to shoot a box.   for those who want beefed up 240's give pmc a try.   i will stick with something(almost anything) else.

Jim,

This may not be an exact Pack Rifle version. It does have the 18inch bbl, pistol grip stock, saddle ring, it is angle eject with the cross bolt. I have seen the pack rifle version before but I don't remember them having a saddle ring. Also, the wood on this gun is incredable and noting like the ones I have seen. It's got the thick gloss finish with a high grade walnut.. The wood is more like what you would find on a browning bl high grade. The stock or forend are NOT checkerd on this one. I think it is an older version with a serial # in the 6.4m range. Not sure what year this was produced but I am trying to find that out. As best I can tell its never been fired. Not a scratch on the loading ramp.

Picked up some ammo today and plan to take it out to the range tommorow.

Anyone know who on the web sells the 44mag PMC loads ?   I have found places that sell PMC, but none offer the 44mag loads.

PMC is stocked by several dealers here I bought some a few months ago in 240 gr fp just to break in my new Redhawk and gather more brass. Magtec is another inexpensive factory load that I use. Try google.com for Davidison they a broker guns and equipment on-line. Probably do a search for the ammo close by dealer. Also Bass Pro usually stocks pistol ammo, white box Winchester another buy.

http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/pmc.html    I only searched through the first few pages of google....$15.95/50 is the best price I saw. I used the 180 and 240gr JHP's. Before I started Reloading this is all I used with exception of a few boxes of Remington Core-Lokts.

I checked out the Ruger site on their "96/44" Nice twist rate and the barrel length is fine but a 4 shot magazine hurts. Can always get extra mags but my 10/22 doesn't like to give them easily. Does any one have this rifle?
