45/70 sn NKxxxx
« on: November 07, 2008, 09:57:22 AM »
I have an opportunity to purchase a 45/70 with the NK serial number. Would this rifle be able to withstand "full house" 45/70 loads? I don't know if I can or not either but would the frame? Charlie

I wouldn't recommend pushing it over 40kcup levergun loads, that's a lot of breech thrust for that big of case head, but you'll probably back off due to recoil abuse long before abusing the frame!!  ;D

Thanks Tim, is $220 a bad price for a good used 45/70?

It's tough to believe, but my local outfitter has the 45/70s Blue/Wood on sale for $199.  I already have a synthetic, but I don't think I can pass this up...

That's a little high for that old of rifle Charlie, that's a new price pretty much, $220-$250 is the normal new price range, I looked at new Handis on the rack at BiMart and Sportsman's Warehouse today, they were $230, see if you can talk em down, or throw in some ammo or a scope and rings to sweeten the deal.  ;) If you're entertaining the idea of getting accessory barrels fitted to it, remember they won't fit any of the * marked barrels to it.

I thought about the * barrel issue. I may offer them $175 and see what they say. Thanks, Charlie

I agree with Tim, that price to too high!!

I have a local GS here and saw a BC 45-70 NEW for $299.99!!!  I was tempted, but dont shoot the 3 45-70's I have now!!  Becides, right now I feel its more important I "feed" the firearms I have now. So I'm using that money for components!!! (I'm VERY worried about the impending climate once Obamanation takes office!!)
