Where to get .357 mag rechambered to 357 Max?
« on: November 02, 2008, 02:18:00 PM »
I have a .357 mag on a SB-1 frame and am considering having it converted to 357 Maxium. Will the SB-1 frame be strong enough to withstand the higher pressure and if so where can I get this work done? What is the ballpark cost?

Yes you can do your frame, personally I'd do it myself I've done two and its a piece of cake, Just rent the reamer and do it. Its self guideing and will not cut to far because it stops cutting when it hits the rim. Great round works real well on whitetails. 8)

I believe you can rent a reamer for about 40 bucks.

That sounds so cool I hunt a lot with a 35rem. and like the idea of the 357max I bit they are neck to neck. The 35 rem its to hard to reload and bass is getting harder to find. Can you shoot the 180s out of a max? Is it a good Palmetto brush gun for FL hog? Can you find brass?

I do not think it is wise to convert a sb1 357 to a max. Sb1 is a low pressure frame

The best way is the old fashioned way. Buy your self a SB 2 frame or a new gun with a SB 2 frame and send it in for a 357 Magnum barrel. After you get it back rent a reamer, like it was said above under $40 with shipping. That is what I did. A 357 Max can be reamed by you, the 35 Remington needs to be done by a quality gunsmith.

357 Max brass can be hard to find. I think right now is one of those times. Remington has said they are not going to make them any more (the only source). I suspect they will haul out the dies again, if there is enough demand. Unless it is one of the more popular chamberings, brass can be hard to get from time to time. I know for a fact that 375 Win brass was impossible to get about a year and a half ago or so. Now you can buy it most any where. Then last winter 221 Fire Ball brass was no where to be found, again you can find most any where now. I suspect the same thing with 35 Remington there will be times it is difficult to get and others, you can find it every where. 223, 308 and 30-06 are a few examples of cases in stock at all times.

I've got a gunsmith in lower Michigan who has the reamer and does it for 35 bucks.  If anyone is interested pm me for the information.  As soon as I can find another .357 barrel, it's going down there.  The one I've got shoots so well I don't want to tinker with it.

As to avalibility of brass. Midway has some and its on sale now. I have also seen it on numerious other locations. I bought 200 pcs about a month back just to bolster my stock. Will little time spent, anyone reading this can have hundreds of pieces of brass with in a weeks time, ordering on-line.

I know its a required part but we are speaking of a single shot firearm. How many pcs of brass are required. I would say a couple hundred should outlive an active shooter.

BTW, Its one of my alltime favorites.
