Need help with Marlin 336 sights!
« on: November 02, 2008, 08:10:07 PM »
Long story, please allow me to explain my problem.  I purchased a used 336, someone had removed the rear sight to get it out of the way for scope mounting.  I purchased a set of Williams fiber optic sights as replacement, upon shooting these placed shots 12" high at 50 yards with the rear sight at its lowest setting.  To zero, I had to purchase another front sight, this one a full 1/2" tall.  Since the front sight is so high, I feel its so exposed that it will be too easy to damage during use. I don't want to simply buy another set of factory height sights as these can't be used as backups for my scope without removing the scope mount bases.  Can someone tell me what sight set to order that are taller than factory originals without requiring a 1/2" tall front sight to properly zero?  I have my scope mounted with quick release rings so if it goes bad all I'll need to do is loosen the levers, remove the scope and quickly have access to my iron sights.  Thanks for any help with this, I can't afford to keep buying sights that won't work!

Why not just order factory replacements from Marlin? Seems the simple solution to me. You didn't mention the chambering but since more 30-30s than all the rest were made I'll assume that's what it is. I've no experience with 336s in that chambering but on my 336-35 Remington I used a Williams receiver peep and the Williams fire sight front and it worked fine.

Are you planning to hunt with the rifle using irons or scope? If scope why worry about the irons and if the irons why the concern about a scope. I've never ever needed back up sights to a scope yet and doubt I ever will. Just decide what you are going to use and get a quality product and don't worry about a back up plan.
