Jagermeister, if you please!
« on: November 03, 2008, 08:13:30 AM »
Took my daughter & her 7mm-08 Handi out after elk yesterday morning.  We were in position and ready ten minutes before legal shooting time.  Half hour later nothings moving but more trucks coming up the road.  When I returned from hydrating the local flora she asked me for the binoculars.

HOLY CRAP DAD! Look at those elk!

She had seen something moving (a herd of about 50) over a mile away in the dawn light.  We set an intersecting course and closed to within 400 yards pretty quick.  The elk made it into the timber, but we were still above them and changed course too.  I spotted them filing through an opening in the trees about 100-125 yards up the hill.  I stuck her Bi-Fur pod in the ground in front of her and started wailing on the cow call.  A few got confused & slowed.  I said "you better do it."  She put the hammer down on a nice yearling cow.

The 140gr Partition entered between two ribs, angled up through both lungs and exited between two ribs.  I heard the impact and was confident she wouldn't get far.  I found blood within 50 yards and a dead elk in another 50.

Proud Papa treated himself to a shot of Jagermeister after supper.

Congrats to both you and your daughter ;D

Looks like you have a lot to be proud of :D

Thanks guys!

Not only did she get an elk, she got a good elk in a good spot.  This herd has been feeding on alfalfa and barley all summer.  I really wanted one of them for the freezer.  It was only a 500 yard drag downhill to a road, and another hunter showed up as I was rigging ropes.  He helped me drag it and snapped that second pic.  Turns out he is the superintendent of a neighboring school district and a good friend of her school principal.  He too was pleased to see an eighth grade girl with an elk.

Thanks to him, I got the hide off and had her cooling nicely by 1 pm.

She is probably hooked for life, and what a good life.
Seems you did not tell her she had to have a 300mag or better to
take an elk, how long was the shot

It is wonderful to see young kids hunting.  They're our future.  If someone shows up at the door with a kid asking to hunt, we not only make room for them, but we try to put them in the best spot.  My dad was not a hunter, but, God bless him, he took time away from his life and business to get me out in the field because he knew how important it was to me.  Ya done a grand thing!  I think I'd have elk backstrap for Thanksgiving.  Pete
.
P.S. Save a shot for me! (not the elk, the liquor. Here's to both of you!).
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Thanks again!

To answer a few of your questions:

DP, we're near Helena in HD380.  I'm trying to arrange pulling her and her little brother out of school early Friday to go after some whitetails.
Elkoholic, Congrats to your daughter too!  I was more that a little envious reading her outstanding Handi success story.  Boys at school a little green?  She has every right to be a little smug!

Rex666, shot was 125 yards max.  Probably closer to 100.  Ammo was a handoad, 140gr Partition seated ~.020" off the lands, slightly compressing 41.5gr. of Varget in a 1x W-W case & Rem primer.

Petmi,  Sorry, the Jagermeister is gone.  I'd been saving that one last shot for a special occasion.  The kids actually prefer backstrap & tenderloins for breakfast; you know, steak & eggs. :)

Her Great Grandfather's knife got to do the honors and her science teacher is pleased to have another heart for dissection later in the year.  It's by her right knee in the scond pic.

Congratulations!!  It's great to see young ones getting into the sport whether they be girls or boy.  We need more youth involement, it gets them out from in front of a screen of some kind, TV or Computer.  My daughters can hunt and fish with the best of them.  Congrats again you have yourself a great hunting partner.  We have started our 2 grandsons hunting this year.

Thanks again guys!

BTW, she tipped over a fat whitetail doe yesterday afternoon.

Bang, two bounds and a nose dive.  Nearly severed the heart from from both lungs. ;D

Looks like my .280 Ultra may get a bye this year.
