Installing a "Doctor" style red dot on a fixed sight M. 83
« on: October 28, 2008, 03:00:52 PM »
Greetings,
I have been unable to find out whether one: it is possible to mount a red dot sight like the doctor's model on a fixed sight model 83.  I know I would have to drill and tap the backstrap for the mounting screws and second if a company is making mounts to which a Doctor style sight can be securely attached. I know the adjustable sight models have a channel machined into the backstrap which is there to take the recoil thereby relieving the mounting crews from that duty.  My intentions are to be able to switch back and forth from fixed sight and side holster to red dot and breast holster for hunting.

Does anyone have any experience in this concept?

Thanks.

sure would be UGLY! If i were you and wanted a dot or scope on a FA id peddle yours and but a long barreled adj sight gun. Im sure the minute you touch a drill to that gun the warantee will be voided.

Can't be done without extensive machining of the top strap and modification of the mounting base, which as Lloyd says will nullify the warranty, and also ruin any resale value. If you want to use a red dot, sell the gun, and buy an adjustable sight version.
Better yet, KEEP the gun and buy an adjustable sight version.

Bummer, I like multi use guns.  Especially when I cannot justify two of essentially the same guns.  I sure enjoy the lines of this fixed sight model.  I had hoped that I could just drill and tap two mounting holes in the backstrap, filling the holes with threaded screw plugs, (screws without heads and they tighten flush to the top surface), when not using the red dot like can be done with some rifles.

Thanks for the help.

FYI, it's topstrap, not backstrap.
