45 LC carbine
« on: October 16, 2008, 11:23:37 AM »
Sighted in my H&R  BC 45 lc buffalo classic using a 2X7 32 mm bushnell elite 3200 in a discontinued model that i got for a great price from Natchez shooter supplies. My ?, I'm a hunter not a shooter & don't reload. I'm shooting buffalo bore 260 gr JHP loaded to 1450 fps. When i sighted in i"m 2IN high at 50yrds & 1/2 in high at 100 yrds. Our range is only a 100yd range. ? at what range will the round drop 3IN below center.

Download the free trial for RemShoot. It will give you the ballistics you're looking for.

Another option: a ballistic calculator that's always free... :D

http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/traj/traj.html

Always worked great for me.   Should be about 130 Yards, using
a Swift 265gr bullet...but I don't know all your variables - such as altitude.
(I live at 7000 feet and it makes a big difference!)

Your really loking at about a 150 yrd max range for the handloaded 45colt. Its just too round a bullet to expect much long range performance past that...
SO, your load should be good for that...

That 1450fps figure is from a revolver, I get 1900fps+ with the 250gr Speer GDHP loaded to +P level in my 45 Colt BC, since the BB ammo is +P, I'd expect the velocity to be close to that for the 260gr BB ammo in the 20" rifle barrel.

You'd think the extra 400 fps would make a big difference.

But according to the ballistics calculator, it added only about
11 yards.  141 for 3" drop.  Energy jumps 500 fp though at 100.

Even if you went to 1.5" high at 100, it would be 3" low at 152 yards.

Thanks for the help ! I will probably use this gun for most of my gun hunting this year.Although I bought it for "primative weapon" I really like the way it looks ,handles & shoots. To be safe i'll keep my shoots to 120yds or less,

Wow, that makes a huge difference Tim!

According to the ballistics calculator (at 1950 fps), .5" high at 100 yards
has 1573 ft pounds energy.  3" drop is at 151 yards.

But - if you sighted 1.5" high at 100, drop at 150 is only 1.4"!
7.9" at 200 but energy is still 1151 ft pounds.  Very impressive!  :D
