Acquiring points for a moose tag ?
« on: October 31, 2008, 08:21:05 AM »
How does one do that ? Do you have to send the whole cost of a tag or just so much for a point untill you draw. I want to try and make a moose hunt before I kick the bucket. I once drove up the Greys River road  out of Afton,Wy and there were moose everywhere including some good bulls. I would like to hunt in a Western Us state. Thanks

State rules vary.  Don't waste your money on a US hunt unless it is AK.  Go to Canada.  The hunt will be cheaper and the odds of success are very high in many places.  Newfoundland used to have a 90%+ success in years past and a hunt can be done for $6000 or less round trip.

In wyo. you can buy just the point, one a year.
Don't know the # points needed for non-resident,
But I have 12 points (resident) and haven't drawn yet.
The points don't have as much to do with your odds as
the area and type. Put my 13yr old in for a cow moose
and she drew the 1st time! >:(  If you just want to shoot
any  moose (yeah right) a cow tag will get you out here alot quicker.
The odds and points stuff are all on the wyo. game and fish site.

I'd disagree with a western state being a waste.  You can get a shiras moose and its meat home for far less, and I've seen people come home from canada with smaller moose then I got in wyoming.  I think I seen that sucess in wyoming is about 90% and I seen alot of moose on my hunt.  I could drive my truck within 60 yards or so of the moose, Try doing that in alaska.  I drew with 7 points, my dad drew 2 years ago with 6 both bull tags and both of us got nice moose.  Biggest pointer I could give you is to start making calls as soon as you find out you have a tag and get permission to hunt.  Drop them a card letting them know how much you appreciate the landowner letting you hunt and be friendly on the phone.  I had permision from 7 landowners out of 10 that I talked to.  2 of other 3 those would have let me hunt later in the season and the other would let me hunt for a fee (but high).  On rancher was anoyed because he had 8 calls the night befor season.  There are some good areas of public land as well in wyoming, get a blm map and learn how to use it and the gps.  Your odds are actually higher for a non resident to get a tag, because so many residents apply.

Is the Greys River area a good one. I saw a lot of moose there when I was on a Spring bear hunt. But, that has been a long time ago. I would probably have to get an outfitter or helper as I'm somewhat disabled.
