T-3 Lite 338WM
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:41:40 AM »
I finally made a range trip, the SS Tikka T-3 338 Win Mag that I bought last fall did exceptional considering these are the first rounds down range, all I've done to it was clean it good and adjust the trigger to 2lbs-4oz.  1 shot at 25yds to get on paper, no Lead Sled DFT used there but recoil wasn't bad at all with the Limbsaver pad. Then on to the 100yd range, shots 2-3-4 are the upper group, then I let it cool and dropped the elevation  3" and shot the lower group, shooting the $28 a box 225gr Remington Corelokt($23 after rebate ;D), velocity averaged about 2650fps, I have handloads for it, but that's for another trip with less guns to shoot, took 7 with me including a handgun.  ;D

Tim.

Tim,

That's some good shootin, pard. I have the same rifle and it's right on par with yours. You're right about the recoil, it aint bad...except for pussies, LOL

Smart to get on paper with the cheap core lokts, then dial in with the good stuff.

Good deal Tim. I am glad to hear that she shot so well. I am a bit suprised that the recoil was that moderate but i sure am glad to hear it.

The Limbsaver makes a big difference, but I forgot to mention I was also wearing a Past magnum shoulder pad!! But I've worn it with hot 300gr 45-70 loads and it still had more felt recoil than the 338, both with Limbsavers and the Past pad, in fact the 45-70 weighs more than the T3. I only got 2650fps with those loads, the link below shows considerable more velocity with 250gr bullets as does Hodgdon data.  ???  So it may just be the Rem ammo isn't so hot, good for break-in tho and the price was right to compare some factory ammo with handloads. ;)

Tim, have you got a number for the Limbsaver pad for the T-3?  The more I handle one and read these posts, the more I want one!  I think a 25-06 would fit nice between the 257 Roberts and the 257 Weatherby. ;D  DP

It's a #10011 I think, but check the Limbsaver site later, it's on the fritz right now, so I can't confirm it. The template is online at Gun Accessories, you can print it and compare to make sure.

Just got the same rifle in July and started working up lighter loads for it. With the scope it weighs 7 pounds, so I wasn't sure what to expect the first time firing it. I found a decent whitetail load with 62.5g H414 behind the 225g partition (.75 to 1inch). One tenth of a grain above or below and the groups dramatically open up. To be expected I guess, since the cartridge was not designed to perform well at that level. According to the book, I would estimate the velocity to be a little below 2500 fps. This is a nice load to get used to the rifle with and work up from there. With the factory pad and a t-shirt, shooting from the bench was entirely bearable. I've since put on the limbsaver pad to get ready for more intense loadings.  I did notice that the first two groups after removing and reinstalling the barreled action (for trigger adjustment) were erratic and then settled in for the third group (even after a fouling shot). Has anyone else seen this with their Tikka? At first I thought there was a bedding issue because the channel was tighter on one side, but I was reluctant to change anything. The synthetic stock fits the barreled action very tightly.

I have loaded for and shot several .338 WM's that love those 180gr Accubonds. Very accurate, and the most beuatiful terminal performance into wet newspapers. Great bullet.

Tim,
I've been looking at adding a medium bore, .338 to my Tikka line up. I already have the .243 and .30/06 and consider these rifles to be the smoothest and most accurate rifles I've ever owned. Since buying these Tikka rifles, I've sold off all my Savage rifles and I'm seriously considering dumping all my other rifles and using the money to buy more Tikka rifles. I'm looking forward to seeing how your loads improve the performance of your .338. Congrats on the purchase.

Tim: Very nice work. Glad to hear your thoughts on recoil with this rifle in this caliber. I hope to buy one in .270 WSM before too long. I keep a CZ 9,3X62 for the elk woods.
