blue wonder problems
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:45:25 AM »
i have been trying to reblue my win 69a. i purchased blue wonder and after sanding the blueing off, running very hot water over the barrell to degrease and using their degresor with heat as per their instructions.

i get an excellent coat real nice dark black blue exceptable to me after using their developer over night. after 8 hours it turns a dark brown rust they have sent me new materials and their gun oil to try to fix this.

i am on my 5th time hardheaded i guess. anyone have any ideas as to what may be transpiring here.

anyhelp appreciated

thanks

bob

I think one of the definations of insanity is doing the same task over and over again and expecting a different result.  Clearly this doesn't work, don't try number 6, change products and see what you get, it can't be too much worse than what has happened the previous 5 trys.  There is a good reason there is hot bluing and parkerizing, they work.  Larry

Einstein said what Larry is alluding to about insanity.  My advice is that sometimes when you think that you are being frugal, you are actually just making more work and spending more money in the long run.

That being said:

I have not been happy with any cold bluing.  The Brownells creme or liquid, Oxpho Blue, is pretty good, but requires a lot of patience with polishing and recoating.  But, the color is REALLY nice.

One bit of advice, I think from Quickdtoo, was to preheat the barrelled action and to apply the Oxpho Blue to warm, almost hot metal.  I think that I heated my parts to 150-175, guessing.  Hot enough to steam, but not hot enough to sizzle when the cold blue was applied.

After cold bluing, I have been liberal with the CLP overnight and then wiping off excess.

Since you say that you sanded it then I assume that this isn't an heirloom type situation.  Try another type of cold blue.  If that doesn't work then save up and get it Parkerized, hot blued or one of the "wonder" coatings.  If you really want to DIY then look at the Duracoat.  I have not tried it.  I am saving my pennies for some stainless steel to have my neighbor fabricate into a Parkerizing tank.

I have a parkerizing tank made from a piece of 3 inch PVC that I have used for a long time, it is dead easy and cheap.  I will post some pictures and tell you about it in a day or so, I have done a dozen barrels in it and it works perfect.  Larry
