Its my understanding that the newer 357/44mags are built on the SB1 shotgun frames. But the older models where on the SB2 RIFLE frames.

Really makes no difference unless you want or need to have rifle barrels fit to the SB1. The factory will not fit rifle barrels as its not safe.

If It says SB2 its more desirable for those of us who buy extra RIFLE barrels for a single receiver. Shot gun barrels are not an issue and can be safely fit to either receiver.

I have one of the new SB1 .357s and it's a great shooter.  For the price I see little reason to be concerned about it.

IMO the guns are so cheap, the extra barrel progam isn't worth fooling with.

Most rifle barrels are marked SB2, but the frames have never been marked until now, the frames of the SB1 44 and 357 and their combos are the first to be marked as such. It's also on their website and in the 2008 catalog.

*Note: The frame of the 44 Mag. (SB1-S44) and the 357 Mag. (SB1-S35) cannot be fit with any other centerfire rifle barrel. They are capable of being fit with accessory shotgun barrels, but their rifle capability is limited to the specific 44 or 357 Mag. barrel that it is shipped on the gun.

Last week I picked up a .44 sb1, I Had a choice to get the SB1 or the SB2 frames, and since I dont plan on fitting another barrel, I saved the 60bucks and got the sb1 and bought ammo with it.

Good luck

Is that any reason to think that those calibers can be fired from ANY SB-1 or are those SB-1s yet another frame? The .357 alteration to a Max,is there a similar boosted .44 and are THEY safe to shoot in any other SB-1?  Ken

Most SB1s have a large firing pin.  The SB1 frames on these new .357s & .44s have a small firing pin.  That's an important difference.  I wouldn't convert a SB1 Handi to .357 Max or .445.  I don't think it's safe.

I agree with Swampman on the issue of rechambering SB1 357s or 44s to their higher pressure kin.  I seriously doubt H&R will ever offer to fit SB1 frames with 357/44 rifle barrels in the accessory barrel program. It was hoped they would, but Swampman pointed out the major disadvantage of the SB1 frame for use with higher pressure chamberings. Some of those that have tried their Max barrels on SB1 frames have seen perforated primers (myself included ::)), not a good thing. :'(

My daughters SB1 410 pardner, NN Serial#, has the small firing pin. Not sure if all the 410's were this way but that one sure is. I don't think it would be a good idea to shoot any of the rifle barrels on that frame, but maybe some of the lower pressure pistol calibers would be ok.

I think they have about 3 different diameters of firing pins, at least it looks that way from the examples I have.

One more somewhat "hidden" variable to trip up the non-expert! If Bustas' daughter's frame had been the one on "ima's gift" ,it could have fooled even more people. I wonder what the cost differential is ,to produce all SB-2s or to have multiple frame types with all of their different materials, methods of manufacture, heat treating, handling/stocking, space allocation and parts identification, both for manufacturing and part replacement, along with the increased threat of liability?
