.308 bullet weight
« on: September 20, 2008, 07:42:39 AM »
I am the proud new owner of a Ultra-hunter in .308 Winchester.  I topped it with a Burris 3-9x40 and am ready to put some rounds down-range.  Just a quick question....do any of you have any advice on how heavy a bullet I should sight/break in with? I was thinking either the 150 grn or 168grn..thanks for any suggestions.

I've been using these in my new barrel. Reasonable price plus Remington has a cash back deal as well!

I agree with that & I just bought some 168 Bergers that are doing well for alot of people, but often seating depth sensitive. I also am now trying the new 168BT, which has a sharper profile & higher BC than the 165BT.

My .308s a Ruger, but I get superb accuracy with 168 gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertips.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

I found some time to get out to the range today.  I brought a box of the 150 gr. Remington Core-Lokt.  I was surprised at how well the handi grouped them, I just need to work out some scope issues....don't trust the kid behind the counter to get a good bore-sight in..do it yourself.  As a side note, a fellow at the next bench was shooting a Remington 700 chambered in .308.  He was shooting 210 gr. Berger bullets.  --Amazing thing was...he was nearly putting them through the same hole at 50 yards.  Does anyone have any experience with this bullet in a handi?

Going to be a handloading proposition most likely.  You might have to lengthen the throat on the gun to get much velocity from such a small case.  50 yards isn't too much of a test, 110 vmaxes would most likely do this as well.  Usually you want the heavier, high BC'ed bullets for long range where they reduce drop and wind drift past 3 or 4 hundred yards.

I used to have real good luck with the 165gr Nosler Ballistic tips. Have tried the 168gr in the 30-06 and they seem to do a good job.

I read somewhere, years ago, that the 168 gr. BT was the ballistically correct round for the .308.  All I can tell you is I tried it, I use it and it works for me.  I think I've shot a thousand of them.  Two notable shots included a fox and coyote on about the same spot at more than 350 yards;  both shot broadside behind the shoulders, they ain't big targets.

I picked up a couple of boxes Federal Match 168 gr BTHP.  We'll see what happens.  At the very least I'll have some decent brass for my reloads.
