Question about barrel fitting
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:12:04 AM »
I have just received 2 receivers and one of them fits loose on all of my barrels.... I have read the facts and understand the methods.... I see most of you use some sort of epoxy or jb weld to attach the shim in place.... I am debating on the gluing or silver soldering the shim in place.... I have always been a fan of solder as opposed to glue, however its a bit more time and skill required, and I'm out of practice.... How have your barrels held up with gluing shims in place??? What is the caliber and round counts??? I will probably be putting my 243 barrel on the loose receiver since it is my least used handi...

I have more than 500 rounds on a .45-90 using JB-Weld and I hear that Tim (quickdtoo) has some better stuff.

I have several barrels that have JB Welded shims including the 500S&W and the late 300WSM, the 500S&W has over 120 rounds down range with a lot of max/near max loads and it's doing fine. The 300WSM became a donor for another custom chambering, it survived great as a 300WSM, loads that thoroughly tested the action with lots of flex, but the underlug shim did fine until the finished stub barrel went into the bluing tank, the JB Weld didn't take that well. The new shim has been fitted with Super Weld which has a compressive strength almost 3 times that of JB, so it should do very well even without a shim, but it hasn't been to the range yet, that's on hold for a while until after fall salmon/steelhead and deer season are over.

 Is the Super-weld a J-B product?   Ken
