carbine barrel for hunting
« on: August 01, 2003, 01:34:05 AM »
I am trying to decide which barrel to buy and where to buy.  I had wanted a 6.5 swede- too hot.  What about the 7x30 waters?  It seems that this is probably the best 7mm cartridge or all around hunting round available for the contender frame.  Any others to consider?

I had a contender (pistol) in 7-30 waters.  It worked very well with not a lot of recoil.  I shot a small 10pt with it . . . then got an itch and sold it to cover the cost of another gun.  I really regret doing that.  I would think in a rifle it would be excellent.  Graybeard and others told me that it was good (in pistol form) out to 225 yds on deer size game.  Much better than the next closest caliber the 30-30 as far as range goes.  I think you would really enjoy it. :D

7-30 Waters

Hi......I have the 7-30 Waters in both Hunter pistol and carbine configs....
have yet to shoot a deer with mine, and just picked up the carbine, but the hunter pistol is a dandy....it has I believe a 12" barrel with muzzle tamer and a 2.5x lited reticle scope....let me tell you I picked it up used at a show...not knowing anything ab the cal, the guy says you wont regret it....being a sucker for used car salesmen, I bought it......hahahaha..... but you know he was right...havent reloaded for it yet, but factory ammo is very accurate....it was shooting great at 100 off the bench, so moved out to a metal plater at 400 yards.....this is a 10 " plate....if I do my part and place the thick part of the duplex crosshair dead center, it will right the plate everytime...the pistol went into the NO-SELL part of my gun safe
and yes eventially I will reload for it........Rob in Olympia

My hunting partner and I both have Contender carbines in 7-30 Waters.  Each gun has accounted for it's share of mule deer here in Colorado.  We have larger caliber guns, but it seems when we're just poking around and scouting, we always carry the Contenders.  Just so happens we also run into most of our deer at those times.
