Canoe registration and license fees?
« on: August 06, 2008, 04:45:56 PM »
How much is it to get a canoe licensed and registered in Illinois, and be legal in the water? I searched the DNR website but, it's so messed up, I can't make sence of it.

I need to renew mine.  When I bought my 2nd canoe in 2006 it was $13 for a Transfer and Renewal.  The previous owner had let the registration expire.  My other canoe registration is due this year, oops at the end of June 2008.  I believe it is $5.00 for 3 years.  If you think that you might remotely put a motor on the canoe, mark that on the registration.  It did not cost me any additional to mark it as outboard powered.  I put 6hp.  I have heard that if you don't mark it as an outboard the DNR police can give you a citation.  I have never had any experience with that at all.  Good luck.  River levels are down around my part of the state right now.  The Mackinaw River is at the lowest I have seen for quite a while.

Yes, I don't know if a canoe will float on the Vermillion, right now?

DNR Police will not give you a ticket if you did not mark outboard motor- not a requirement.
You can be cited if you have a motor on canoe and are only displaying reg. sticker.
If you have a motor you must also display IL numbers along with the reg. sticker.

The square stern canoe that I bought used already had the numbers on it so it hadn't even occurred to me.  My other canoe doesn't have the numbers displayed, but I doubt that I would have an outboard motor on that one.
