What "over the counter" ammo are you guys using in your 500's? Any difference in felt recoil?

cutter44, the factory ammo my 500 shoots best is hornady 350 gr.,xtp/mag, the 300 gr.Evolution shoots ok but not as good as the 350 gr., last year i was in a store with ultramax 330 gr.,rn-fp for 19.00, i bought three boxes they are a good shooter, a friend of mine loads 500 for his pistol, i ordered new brass and bullets, he loaded me a good round that shoots great in my 500, i think the load was 45.5 grs., 296 powder with hornady 350 gr.xtp bullet, i will look up the shells and check the loads to make sure about the powder load.

That load of 296 is 2.5gr over Hodgdon's max load of 43gr with the 350gr XTP for the 500S&W!!  :o

I realy like the hsm 500 ammo .I have a sw perfomance center revolver with a 10.5 barrel and shoot tight groups at 200 yards with there stuff. You used to be able to order 500 ammo from hsm direct but the 500 in 300 and 350 is a cabelas only. Hsm does offer a 400 grain that you can still order direct from them. For the money I dont know how they can offer such a goon product. They are cheaper then anyone for 500 mag and it is a good product.I have my eye on a 500 rifle to go with my revolver

Tim, i looked on the box today and the label was 40.5 gr. 296, it was a box of 20 loads, and there was 9 loaded and 11 cases in the box, so i have shot 11 rounds of this load.

39gr is the start load, so that's fine.  ;)

I haven't tried any new ones (Over the counter) in a while. They are way expensive and I didn't find any that really shot that well. I worked a long time with the 500ge XTP. I really wanted to find a load for that bullet. Couldn't get anything that consistently got me under 2" @ 100yrds. There was a couple that would suffice and I have concluded that this will never be a tack driver, but it rally doesn't need to be does it! ::) ;D ;)

If you decide to reload, (I recomend it if you want to shoot that 500 much) I'll suggest what Quick turned me on to some years back.  Ranger Rick GC lead bullets. (He shoots the 700GR monsters!!)  Now that's about all I load!!  My favorite is the 440gr WFN!!!  Smacks down anything you hit right quick!!

CW's got the 500 pegged, I've shot several handloaded bullets in mine from 350gr to 700gr and 2" is about as good as it gets, but like he said, that's good enough. Those 700gr FNGCs are awesome, althougth there isn't a lot of room left for powder, that's a 440gr CP beside it in the pic!!! :o

Welcome back CW!! ;)

Thanks Quick.

I have been lurking here and there. Just not posting.

I get the urge every year about this time...We have a family VK in Northern Maine. the week is usually finished up helping family and friends put out bear bait for the Sept opener. That gets me juices flowing and here I am!!

Would you believe sans the hornet and couple wood chucks and Raccoons, I haven't set foot in the loading/handi room all season!!!  ::) :o :o :o :'(

There is definitely a difference in felt recoil depending on the load.

I've tried MagTech in both 275 and 400 grain weights, and the 400 will definitely shove me around more than I like.

The Federal 275 Barnes JHP is the most accurate in mine, among the light weights I've tried.

Thread drift is common among shooters, we just like to talk, and often get "off-topic" from the OP's intent.
