Ultra Varmit (Choate) stock weighting
« on: August 03, 2008, 07:23:07 AM »
I have a .223 Ultra varmint with the associated Choate stock.  I am looking to weight it a little since I have sent out my receiver to get a new .308 barrel and will be using this same stock.  I have to use this type of stock due to a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery (this is the most comfortable way to shoot for me).  My question is has anyone else weighted this stock and if so how. I know that the buttplate will come off and there is a void there that I can fill with lead shot.  There is a void in the pistol grip but is open at the top and the bottom.  I am thinking of filling the top with epoxy, letting it dry, filling the stock with shot and then putting additional epoxy on the bottom to seal it up.  Any thoughts?

Either one of those ideas will work , also you could use the spacer for a pattern and make a steel or lead weight to replace the spacer , just paint it black match the stock .

Just don't add any more weight to the forarm other than a bi-pod , too much weight up front has been known to break off the forarm stud .

I like the spacer made of steel idea.  I work at a factory that has all thickness of steel laying around so in theory I could make it just about as heavy as I would want.  I have 7 lbs of lead to use, so I will try and use this first but I may use the steel spacer idea as well if needed. Oh yeah, I read the post about weighing the forearm and the disaster that it caused. Glad I read that!

That's why I like this forum, great ideas!

I use the Choate Varmit stock on my Handi 45-70. I can shoot it from the bench with comfort and I have a bad shoulder . I didn't have to add any weight.......

OK, so I'm a wimp!  I figure any additional comfort that I can add to my shooting, why not?

If you need to control recoil you might look at www.allaboutshooting.com .Go down the list on the right side of the page and click on recoil. They have two very good products, neither of which requires modification of your rifle and both of which can be used with any long arm.Just a thought.
