"Clean" barrels
« on: August 20, 2008, 02:02:26 PM »
Been a lurker for a while and I appreciate all the advice given here. And my first post goes a little like this...

I have an 83 Premier .454 with a 10" barrel. I also have a Leupold 4X mounted on a Leupold base. There's no bragging on this gun that you guys haven't heard before...she's beautiful. Which brings me to my question.

Considering it's a 10" and the scope will stay with her for life, does anyone here appreciate the "clean" look of removing the front site and filling in the screw holes for a smooth look? I haven't done it yet but I do see other benefits with the front sight hanging out there on the 10" snagging on everything from branches to britches.

Would this be considered a sin in the Freedom world and have you seen it done before?

You can do it but you will ruin the resale value. You may look into a set of screws that would fit flush with the bbl. Anthony

I've never seen a FA with a front sight base that was screwed on. Every one of the many many hundreds I've  ever seen has been soldered . If you do indeed have one which is screwed on, it would be worth contacting the factory to inquire why, and get a letter.
If you mean removing the front screw that holds the blade in place, obviously the blade slot will still be open and will look awful. The later generation of hooded front sights, utilizing a post instead of a blade do have a couple of screws, but the base is still permanently attached to the barrel.
I've ordered a number of FA's over the years with the "No Sight" ( and of course, therefore, no base ) option, in those cases where I knew I would always have the gun scoped. It is a clean look which I like, but you can't get that with the question you're asking.

Same at ONeill ~

I did so on my FA 83 in 475L because it was really really tall. I'd be kidding myself to think I'd ever want to use the irons on it again in my remaining life ~ But because of the sight base sitting there just made it look unfinished/incomplete. I have removed the fronts off of my BFRs w/good ascetics. Containerized the parts to the gun and placed in the safe for resell someday ~ maybe.
