That depends, everything in 2007 was 1:9" except some Superlights, before that is anyone's guess, they made both, the only way to know for sure is check it, see the FAQs.

ok, mine has he serial number prefix "HX" so it is a 2007, so that would mean 1-9" ?

Marlin started making the barrels early in 2007, so yours could still be 1:12", the ONLY way to know what it is it to check it using the method listed in the FAQs below the twist rates, H&R doesn't even know!!

So what twist rate is preferable?  In a previous post I was looking into a .223 HR Ultra with what I think is a bull barrel.

The 223 Ultra has been available with 2 different barrels, the Ultra Hunter has a 22" standard contour barrel, the Ultra Varmint has a 24" bull barrel. The 1:9" twist generally will shoot longer, heavier bullets than the 1:12", but that isn't everyone's experience and it depends on the bullet of choice. Use the search selecting this forum only and you'll find tons of info on both.
