45-70 BC Max Pressure
« on: July 21, 2008, 05:45:41 PM »
I haven't been able to find data anywhere on the max safe pressure for the BC chamber in 45-70. Have I missed it somewhere in the FAQ's?

Also, anybody have load data for the 480 gr Schmitzer .459 cast bullets on TOTW?
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

Yup, you missed it, see What load level for the 45-70 in the Handloading section of the FAQs, the BC/Target has the same SB2 frame as the Handi, all CF rifle barrels are 4140 alloy except the stainless. You can use 485gr-500gr cast bullet data for that bullet, several powder mfrs show data for those bullets as well as the Lyman 48th and the Lee 2nd.

The Buffalo Classic will easily digest Level III 50,000 CUP 45-70 loads.  However, once you've shot such loads in one you will realize that they are not what the BC is about.

My Schmittzer load for my BC is as follows:
45-70 Gov't
488 grain (wheelweights) Lyman Schmittzer (457658) seated to 0.05" off the lands
Winchester brass, 2.1 trim
CCI 200 primer
36 grains IMR3031
1200 fps
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

Kevin

I have shot some real nasty Ruger Level loads in my 22" Handi 45/70 and I will tell you that your shoulder will give up well before the H&R will .  :o

That's why most shooters will stick to the mid Levergun Level loads and these loads will do just about anything you would want to do with a 45/70 .  ;)

But if you shoot the Ruger #1 level loads and still want more, there are a couple things you can do... ;)
