Ithaca model 37 ???
« on: July 13, 2008, 11:01:23 AM »
I have a Deerslayer barrel on this Ithaca. Is this for shooting slugs ?  It is a smoothbore. I have a chance to buy this and asking price is $300. Is the price average ?  It`s in near excellent condition.

The Deerslayer barrel is for shooting slugs. In the days before rifled barrels, they were regarded as one of the finest slug guns around. i would think for that price, it would be a fine buy.

I managed to snag up the mod 37 for $200. So what are all the slugs that`ll shoot good in it for Deer and Hogs ? I was looking at Dixies but I think their all for 3" and I need 2 3/4".

Burch I also thought the deerslayer was rifled.Get a flash light or something and shine into the barrel(unloaded of course..lol)Look and make sure it doesn't have lines in it.If it does then it is rifled.I guess you have already done this since you say it is smoothbore. For a smoothbore I would use foster style slugs or either the new winchester rackmaster slug, the super-x rifled slug, remington slugger, federal truball or any other foster style slug.I use the super-x rifled slug in my smoothbore. It's good out to around 75yds...100 maybe...Hope I helped.

Someone here told me if I get another barrel for it, it would have to be fitted by a gunsmith. I`d like to find one that has screw in chokes.  If I find a mod. 37 barrel does it have to be fitted also or can I just drop it in and shoot it. Also is it possible to get a mod. 37 barrel with screw in chokes ?

Hastings makes a fine rifled barrel for the mod. 37 serial# 855000 and above, just slap it on.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.
