45/70
« on: July 14, 2008, 06:01:37 PM »
Well I got a 45/70,
Don't know how I will like it yet, I just shot it in the backyard this afternoon a couple of times to check the recoil. I bought a box of the 325 LEs. To me it kinda resembles the recoil of a 12 gauge with a stiff load. I kinda wish I could find some data using something like Hornady 250s or something like that. Those would take care of everthing I would be shooting. If anybody has some data to share it would be appreciated. ;D

Congrats! A Limbsaver recoil pad will go a long way to making the warmer loads comfy, see the FAQs for that info.

Dunno of any 250gr .458" bullets by Hornady, 300gr is where they start, there's a ton of trapdoor data out there for them tho.  ;)

I like the Goex 405gr blackpowder cartridges personally, but then again I like the puff of white smoke, the fire at the end of the barrel, and the chore of cleaning all the corrosive stuff from the barrel after a long day of shooting 'em.  Come to think of it, I don't think i've shot a single smokeless round through my .45-70 at all.  The recoil isn't too bad on those, and they'll take anything in North America inside 100yards.  You can't go wrong with heavy bullets traveling at modest velocities.  They penetrate deep, and make a big hole all the way through.

Take the but-plate off and fill the bolt hole with lead shot.  It will tame the recoil right down.

I'm a little skinny old man.  I select a cartridge to do what I want it to.  I shoot the Hornady 325s because they perform best in over the counter ammo.  Recoil?  So what?  You're shooting a big gun.  It will kick.  You can tame it and it doesn't have to beat you up.  I think a lot of it is in our heads.  We're educated, programed to get whacked shooting a big load.  It doesn't have to be.  Hold it in tight, relax a little and let it fly.  I find that if I'm leaning over a shooting bench, the felt recoil is much greater than shooting offhand.  Again, it is probably because I have no meat on my bones.  The bottom line is if a little old Wop can handle .45-70s, 300 Win Mags, etc. anyone can........just need to adjust your attitude.

If you meant a 300 grain Hornady here is a load I've been using for years:

45-70 Gov't
300 grain Hornady hollow point seated to 2.55" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primer
55 grains H4198
2170 fps from a 22" barrel

This is a starting load for the Marlin 1895 45-70, approximately 28,000 CUP.  It shoots 1.1" five-shot 100-yard groups in my Marlin 1895.  Very good deer, black bear and hog load.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

IMO the Remington 405 grain factory load can't be beat.  It will kill anything that moves, and has no recoil.  It's accuracy cannot be improved upon.

Sorry for the late replys fellows.
I had to go on an emergency job for a couple of days. +1 on the leaning over the bench petemi it kinda got in my face the other day when I shot it off the bench. Ill get used to it and probably start loading for it before too long and get something going that I like. I most definatly believe that there is not many four legged creatures that could stand a round out of it. I love to tinker so Im not done with it yet.
Thanks for all the replies.

Morgan, One of the guy's here signature is ".45-70  It's almost a religion".  Well, It IS a religion and I'm an ordained minister.  If I had to give up all my guns but one, I'd keep the .45-70.  The other thing is don't go believing the crap that it is a "100 yard gun".  Mine will shoot wood chucks easily at that distance, deer at 200 - 300, and I'll bet I could nail a human predator at 400 if my adrenalin was up.

rugerfan01,

I don't know about the rifle as I'm still cruising around for a 45-70 barrel for my handi.  (Noticed I just missed one that OldBob had reduced the price on. :'()  But I can tell you that I was just shooting a few different loads out of a newly aquired Contender with a 45-70 barrel and I was shoooting a home cast 330grain lead hollow point (my alloy makes it 336grains) which was sitting atop of 15.5 grains of IMR Trail Boss and sparked by a Federal Large Rifle primer.  That load was a sweet heart out of the Contender and if I remember correctly, around the 1250fps range with my chronograph about ten feet from the muzzle.  This was out of a 16 inch ported handgun.

Best,
Wolfgang

Rugarfan01:

The recoil goes with the party.  :) Been shooting this calibre for a lot of years starting with a Trapdoor and moving along to Winchesters and others with the latest being a BC.  Never met a 45-70 I didn't like.  There are a bunch of loads available for these rifles, one of the better sources for the handloader are the "One Calibre" loading manuals.  You can find everything from mild trapdoor to really heavy loads listed.

Wolfgang:

Like the looks of your Pembroke.  We have a male that weighs between 45 and 50 pounds, one of the best dogs we've ever been owned by.  Funny watching him try to keep up with the big cow dogs when he's over on the farm.  Real "City Slickers" kind of thing.

I've got a Contender rifle with the short stock that I use a 16" ported 45-70 barrel on.  Heavy loads tend to kick a bit since the rifle weighs just 4.5 Lbs.  Bit of trivia, shooting a 300 grain jacketed bullet the TC averaged 1567 FPS, same load in the 32" BC averaged 1964 FPS.

Wow!  397 fps isn't trivia when you're dealing with a big bullet, or any bullet for that matter.

Folks,
I got a box of Rem 300 grain Hollow points this morning a went to the range this afternoon and shot it a couple times.
Its not bad at all with these. I think Im going to like it alright.
The only thing I didnt like about these bullets is they were $38.00 out the door. WOW.
Needless to say I went online when I got home and ordered some bullets and dies.
Ill have 40 brass after I shoot these and the 2 leverevolutions I have left and that ought to last me for a while.
I hope I get to hunt with it at least a couple of times this season.
The work loads looks awfull busy. Maybe Ill get a fly by or something!!
Again thanks for all the replies.
GOOD LUCK and good SHOOTING!  :)

I've noticed the Leverevolution cases are shorter than standard. Has anyone reloaded them?

Tencubed,

Yeah, mines a good dog.  He's afraid of the cat, the toaster, and just about everything else but he really is a good dog.  The only bad thing I've really got to say about the breed is the horrible shedding.  Every time I brush him the back yard looks like I just got finished slaughtering rabbits! ;D

Rugerfan01:

Those Remingtons are a bit spendy for sure.  When you start reloading you may find the different brands and/or lots of brass will give different point of impact on the target.  Shoot what your sighted in with when you go hunting.  After awhile you get used to the rifle and learn how to hold it so the recoil is not as bothersome.  I've found the muzzle blast from heavy loads is more of a problem when I'm hunting.  At the range I use ear protection, going to have to start doing the same in the field.  I'm deaf enough already.

Enjoy your rifle.

The extra velocity of the long barrel on the BC is very noticeable when shooting at long range.  If I could figure a way to carry that long barrel in a TC holster the way I do the little rifle the world would be really good.   :)  That 32" BC pipe made me trip a lot when I gave it a try. Velocity gain runs about 25 FPS per inch of barrel above the 16" TC.  Holds true with a couple of other barrels in this calibre that are between these two extremes.

Wolfgang:

Our Corgi came from a family that abused him very badly.  Gave them a choice and they decided to let us buy him for ten bucks.  He used to be afraid of nearly everything but now just shys from guns and firecrackers.  Loves to kill rats and would probably do the same to a cat if he could catch one.

I hear you on the shedding.  Vacuume every day to keep up with it.  I'm convinced he is a perpetual motion machine if we could figure out how to harness the energy.  One pound of food produces one pound of poo and two pounds of hair.

One of my Aunts has one of those dogs, name is Trixie (the dog not my Aunt).  My dad told me a story about Trixie and 6 cats that attempted to clean Trixie.  After a four minutes all 6 cats had hair-balls.  Sorry :).
