please post the gun and ammo you use!
« on: October 27, 2008, 07:39:24 AM »
im interested in seeing how well your gun shoots, and see what the relation between velocity and rate of twist is, and see just how much a fast twist improves the flight of a high velocity slug.  sooooo, if you could tell me the gun you use, your average group size at 50 or 100 yards (preferably 100), and the slug ammo you use, and the rate of twist your barrel has (if you dont know please still post, i can figure it out if you tell me what gun you use), i would really appreciate it!  thanks!

I'm shooting a 12 ga. remington 870 w/ 23" cantilever barrel, top with a nikon pro staff 2-7x33. I think my barrel twist is 1-35. Ammos I'm using are lightfield hybred 2 3/4". I sight the gun 2 1/2" high at 50 yards and it hits perfect at 100 yards. I get 1-2" groups at both distances depending on mother nature.
Practice make perfect!!!

20 gauge USH

hastings 2 3/4  50yds  approx. 1.5"
                     100yds approx. 3.5"

remington buckhammer  reduced recoil  2 3/4    50yds approx. 2.5"

brenneke  magnum silver slug  3"   50 yds hit the target sideways.  These were the last slugs I shot that    day and may have been caused by lead build up in the grooves.

winchester Super X slugs   2 3/4"   50 yds approx.  3.5"

Custom 12 ga 1187 with a pinned  Badger barrel 1-26 twist, 3 inch groups with Lightfield 2 3/4 or 3 inch, also 2 inch groups with Federal Barnes Expanders 1 oz 2 3/4 or 3 inch at 100 yards. Have also got 2 1/2 groups at 150 yards with the Federal. Would have probably gotten that with the Lightfield but the BC is just better on the Federal, so they are effected much less by wind at that distance. Also have a semi custom 12 ga 1100 with a pinned Remington barrel 1-35 twist 3 inch groups with Lightfield 2 3/4 and Federal Barnes Expanders 2 3/4 inch 1 oz at 100 yards. Pictures of both guns are here under Slug Gun Pictures.

The finish is fair at best. But I had mine redone. I had a weird thing happen the extractor/ejector fell out (very rare). But my gunsmith fixed it, and shoots great. It's a very fast twist 1-26 so it is supposed to shoot the light fast slugs good. But I've had the 1 oz slugs shoot really good. I don't think it's the barrel I think it's the ammo. To many inconsistencies in the plastic sabots. Once you get light slugs you tend to have issues, depending on the wad and if the gases are escaping. The bigger slugs have less plastic around them, and seems to have less margin for error. They tend to fill the bore better, that's why Lightfield is so popular. But I know Federal is working on this issue as we speak. So we'll see what the future brings.

12 gauge USH.  I have shot Hastings, Federal Fusion, SST, and Winchester XP3 all under 4" at 100 yards.  Haven't had a chance to try to tune in a super tight group yet.  I'll be hunting with the XP3 slugs in a couple weeks.

mossy 500 with full rifle barrel with 4x Bushnell Banner Shotgun scope
hornady 2 3/4 SST sabots - less than 9.00 a box last year
2" or less at 100 yards - all shots touching at 50 yards. Only 2.5 inches low at 150.

these shoot great from my gun. I don't shotgun hunt alot, but do use it 3 or 4 times a year to hunt a shotgun only area.

Benelli M2 with a Bushnell Holo sight
Buck hammer work great in my at 50 yards 3 hole cutting each other with one flier about 2 inches off of the group.  I didn’t have any more so I couldn’t take them out to a hundred to see what they would do. But they sure put an impressive hole in the paper. If they  are as devastating as they look on paper they should stop deer in their tracks.
Barnes expanders ¾ ounce slugs had a raged hole at fifty and about a three inch group at 100.
I used the other Barnes bullets 1oz. (the style that BRI introduced about 25/30  years ago). They had a raged hole at 50 and could barely keep them on a 2’x3’ piece of paper at 100. This style slug worked great in an old Winchester 1200 with a slug barrel on it, I still regret selling that gun.
The Winchesters gold tip and platinum tip only grouped about 4” at 50 so I didn’t try them out further.
All these may have done better if I had been using a scope.

12 ga USH remington 1 oz sluggers 3x9 Marlin scope came on the gun shoots big hole at 50 yards. As far as I have shot it , would shoot out  to 100 yards with confidence. Not tried on game as of yet. I don't shoot past 150 yards if I can help it with any gun.

AMEN on the lighter version CM. That 12ga ush is on a 10 ga frame and barrell with steel weight in the stock. Almost needs a turret to shoot it. I only carry 1/2 mile at the max to tree stand so it's ok for that. A solid gun though. I do like the look of the Tracker II in 20 ga. almost like a rifle with the slim barrell.

Rem 870 with pinned hastings barrel and a Sightron SII 1.5-6x42 mounted to the receiver.  With hastings laser accurate 2 3/4 mag slugs, I am getting one ragged hole at 50 yds.  Have not had an opportunity to shoot at 100yds yet.  I also installed a light sear spring which give my 870 a 2 1/2lb trigger pull.  I think it helped out allot.

That is one impressive rig Jim. Effort and time usedto put together a fine weapon. What did that scope set you back. Mine is the 3-9 x 32 package scope and I use the 3x but would rather have a 1 or 1.5 like I have on my turkey shotgun.

I found the Sightron on sale for $180.  That scope is discontinued.  You can still find them on ebay but they run around $220 to $240.  If you wait and look, they will show up on ebay for cheaper but that all depends on your time.

For an extra $60, CheaperThanDirt has the Sightron SIII 1.5-6x50 on sale for $299.  It normally sells for anywhere from $450 to $700.  Its definately VXIII quality glass.  Its a great scope if you are willing to spend that much on a slug gun scope.  I have one on my muzzleloader and I love it.  Don't get me wrong, I love my SII and it works great in low light but the SIII is even better.  I was going to put the SII on my muzzleloader and then I found the SIII on sale for $300 (this was 3 years ago) so I got it instead.  I would have gotten one for my 870 but it was not on sale at the time and I did not have the money.  I love the SII and I am going to leave it on my 870.  The SIII is the best low light scope I have ever looked thru.  It does have a 30mm tube and a 50mm obj which may put some off to it.  I think the tube makes it more durable.  The 50mm obj is kind of a waste but its still the brightest scope you can buy for $300.  It does not really need anythin above a 42mm but I guess they did that to differentiate it more from the SII.  If I had the money laying around I'd buy another one and just keep it around for future projects.
