Correct primers
« on: June 29, 2008, 07:14:54 AM »
Hello, I am waiting for delivery of a 44 mag barrel (thanks Rono777). I looked in the faq and didn't see if rifle primers were recomended when reloading pistol calibers in Handi rifles. I'm sure pistol primers will work fine but am wondering what others use.
Thanks, Greg

I use Large Pistol primers for all my guns. I have 5 different 44 Mags in handguns and rifles. I use Magnum primers for WW 296/H 110 and standard for the regular type powders.

Ok, thanks. I just wanted to verify what I thought I already knew. I looked in an old Speer load manual I have and it had both rifle and pistol load listed, all using pistol primers
Thanks again, Greg

the last time I came across this subject I read that there was no difference in the amount of the priming compound used in either type primers but the thickness of the metal itself. The pistol stuff is thinner or softer to accommodate the lower striking power of pistol firing pin. I use rifle primers in my 44 Mag because I shoot a carbine.

Some where I saw some body sugested rifle primers for the 357 Maxie.
because the Nef had a higher striking force, I can see no difference in the two.
 Just my 2 cents  Marv.

I did not think I had to mention this, but it looks like there is some confusion over what size primers to use. Large Pistol primers and large rifle primers are not the same size height wise. Same diameter, not how "tall" they are. Small pistol  and small rifle primers are the same dimensionally in every respect. If you use a large rifle primer in a large pistol case, the primer will stick above the case head. In the small rifle and pistol primers, they are the same. So what does this mean? You should not use large rifle primers in a pistol case that calls for large pistol primers even if you shoot it in a rifle. I can think of no reliable reloading manual that uses large rifle primers in a 44 Magnum. There are some exceptions to this rule. Some of the more modern hand gun cases are designed with large rifle primers in mind such as the 460 S&W Magnum. In a 357 Max and 454 Casull, both have small primer pockets. The primers are dimensionally the same size. The rifle primer does have a thicker cup so it will handle higher pressures. The 357 MAX is a high pressure round as is the 454 Casull, so small rifle primers need to be used here, unless you are going to down load them. Good Shooting and Good Luck.
