Rifle Country!
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:00:03 AM »
Hey folks, I live in albany county in the capital district area. Since I started deer hunting about 10 years ago Myself, my father and my grandfather have been hunting the partridge run WMA. While it is still a fine place to hunt I have a marlin 30-30 I would like to use rather than have it collect dust in the gun safe. I am looking for areas to hunt in Saratoga and Schoharie counties. I emailed the DEC to find out about state forests in those areas and got a very short reply. Does anyone know of an online map that shows state forest land in new york and what roads move through the areas as far as access is concerned? I found the map for the WMA list but am unable to find state forest maps. Any help would be appreciated!

There is a link on the DEC web page for state forest maps. I will look for it and post it soon.

Albany CO:  after you get through with the encon sites, see  if you can print or find topographical maps of the areas you wish to hunt.  If you haven't used topo maps before, and they are available at the libraries (for copying), you can overlay those on the WMD maps and pretty much find out where you want/need to go.

Saratoga County - some areas to the north and east of the Clifton Park area may be open to rifle but there are bunches of areas in the Schoharie, with Blenheim being one and the Cherry Valley area being another area.  You just have to check out the EnCOn maps and find a place to set yourself up.

Also, just as you have probably already determined after walking around the Partridge Run area, these public areas get set up by mostly local folk with stands and ground blinds either early in the season, pre-season or from last year.  I used to hunt Partridge Run and would go through Altamont and up past the seminary to get there.  There was/is a small parking area across the road from one of the wmd entrances that my buddy and I would go to.

But Partridge Run is a 'strange' area.......my buddy and I once encountered two older hunters and their dog.  These two older fellas were pretty much like me and my buddy and it was interesting talking to them but the strange part was that when we turned around and then turned back, they were gone and we couldn't figure out how they got there or where they parked and when we later looked at where they told us they had come from all we saw were two tire tracks coming from an overgrown area that had not seen a vehicle in over 20 years.............................strange indeed..... Mikey.

Have you ever run into the abandoned cemetary in the middle of the woods up there? That's a strange place to end up while walking around! Not a single headstone in that cemetary has a date earlier than about 1910.

Yes, I have found that cemetery but the two older guys my buddy and I talked to were somewhat yonger than those there.

There is also at least one old house site there where I always had the feeling I was being watched while I was there.

Partridge Run is a bit of a strange place anyhow.  JMTCW.  Mikey.
