Building a target 77/22
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:50:23 PM »
I have a stainless all-weather ruger 77/22 that I'm considering bulding into a better target rifle. It already shoots tiny groups but I think it can do better. Has anyone here done this? Any advice and/or vendors for the parts I'm going to need (chiefly a longer, heavier match grade barrel.)?

get one of the target barrels and set it back and  rechamber it with a match chamber, rimfire technology has one of the better reamers it is a bit tighter than a benz reamer
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

What do you mean when you say "set it back." I don't own or have access to a machine shop so I'm wary of a lot of crazy custom stuff I can't afford to have a smith do.

Machine enough off the chamber end to allow a new "match" chamber to be reamed{many types of match chambers available} and then move the attachment device forward a corresponding amount . This allows the barrel to be headspaced properly. Can be done at home but not for the faint at heart!

I don't really want to get into custom machining. I'm really just considering this for a fun project and to make the rifle into something I'll shoot more.

Can I do it without machining, with available parts?

I was thinking the barrels were held on the same way as the 10/22 rather than screwed on. You should be  able to buy a barrel with a match chamber and swap the old one out.
There are trigger parts available as well

I have a 77/17 that I have "customized". I put on a Volquartsen SS hand lapped barrel with a special cut chamber. The shank of the barrel is over sized and I had to drive the barrel into the receiver, so it is not a slip fit. I also put on a Timmney trigger link. It shoots very well. Under 1/2" at 100 yards time after time. Here is a link to Volquartsen web site for a 22 RF barrel. This is a heavy SS barrel, they also make light weight barrels.

I believe Green Mountain makes custom replacement barrels for the 77/22.

Yes Green Mountain makes 77/22 replacement barrels, i do not think they make custom chambers unless you want a stinger chamber or a 22 short chamber. They are how ever cheaper than the Volquartsen barrels and they are not hand lapped. They do have a good reputation for accuracy in the 10/22 barrels.
