New NEF owner
« on: May 21, 2008, 06:26:00 AM »
Hello,
Last weekend I was at an estate auction and picked up a NEF with Serial number starting NP I read that this is the newer receiver.
I came with two scoped barrels
1)  a 7mm X 57 SB2 Ultra barrel 24" this was the original barrel
2)  a .243 that says "Pardner Handi Rifle" on it.  This one has a different number etched on the lug.

Both barrels seem to fit but the ejector on the .243 doesn't seem to contact the rim well enough to actually eject the round.

I only paid $200 for the whole set up so it seems like a good deal but I have yet to fire the rifle to see how it shoots.  I'm looking to use the .243 on Coyotes and Cats here in New Hampshire and the Mauser on Deer this fall.  I was wondering if this is a good set up?  There appears to be a ton of discussion around the .243 but I can't find anything on the 7mm.  I keep hearing that the .243 likes a heavier bullet so I bought some Rem Core Loct 100 grains.  That's more bullet than I need for Coyotes so I'll have to keep looking for better ammo for them.
Does anyone know anything about the 7mm for the Handi?

Does anyone know anything about the 7mm for the Handi?

I have one just like yours, paid $210 for it last year.  With another barrel and scopes (if they are worth anything) I'd say you got a good deal.  Especially since the 7x57 seems pretty desirable to handi affectionados!  I know I love mine!

Welcome to GBO! The 7x57 was only offered a year or two, there aren't many of them around compared to other chamberings and to get one with an extra barrel for $200 is AWESOME, I paid more than that for just a 7x57 barrel!

The 243 barrel has been added to the frame by a previous owner, you can learn how to check the fit in the barrel fitting info in the FAQs. You'll likely have to experiment with ammo for the 243, some do well with light bullets, others don't, it depends on the ammo, so be prepared to try others. I hope you're not saving coyote hides tho, the 243 is kinda rough on them regardless of the bullet.

It sounds like the ejector latch spring is broken or the ejector just needs a good cleaning, see the info in the FAQs on how to improve ejector function, also the permanent ejector conversion for info on how to R&R it.

Welcome aboard and what a great buy!! I have a 7x57 barrel also and it is great, especially for New England deer hunting. If you reload (and you should) the abundance of .284 caliber bullets make it possible for you to shoot anything in the lower 48 with it. As far as the price I agree with Quick (Tim), the 7x57 barrel alone is worth that much (and much in demand). For your info the .243 barrel is worth less than half that. All in all an OUTSTANDING purchase and we all should be so lucky. This is the day you should buy a lottery ticket, perhaps the luck is still with you....<><....:)

The 7x57 is an outstanding cartridge!  Got my love for all 7mm's from that one. :-*  Factory loads for it are loaded mild, It can keep up with or exceed the 7-08 with good, safe handloads in newer guns including the Handi.  I always had good luck with a bullet in the 140 range and IMR or H-4350.  Count me in as one who would be willing to take that off your hands if you ever want to let her go.  DP.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome.  Sounds like I did ok in this estate sale.  Now I wish I would have bid on all of the reloading supplies that went as well.  I think I"ll need to get into reloading to make both of these barrels work their best.

I'll have fun with this combo getting it to shoot well.  I'll keep you posted it goes at the range.

Welcome! I believe it was the late Jack O'Connor that touted the virtues of the 7X57. I've always had an interest in that round myself. Maybe someday. Dave

Where in NH are you? I'm in Tuftonboro and have 5 NEF's one of which is in 7.62 Tokarev! I also have a connection to a good builder who can fix just about any problems. PM me if you don't want to go public with your location, eh? Guy
