Tikka T3 with Laminated Stock
« on: May 19, 2008, 03:12:06 PM »
I'm considering a Tikka SS/Laminate in 300WSM, anyone have the laminate version of this gun?  Also, I heard that I should only consider a long action cartridge because Tikka is only available in long, and that a WSM is a waste. I don't understand the reasoning behind this, will the balistics of a WSM in this gun be different than in a true short actiion, like a Sako?  Assuming of course, we are comparing the same lenght barrel.

Thanks

Shot magnums were designed to fit a magnum power into a short action thus a liter rifle.  Alas a liter rifle means more recoil.

shootokill, if you do some reading around you will find that most people including myself consider the recoil less violent with the WSM's than their long action counterparts . Freezer however is correct about lighter rifle = more recoil. The recoil is often described as more of a slower hard shove than a fast harsh snap or slap. I prefer to shoot my 325wsm over the 300win any day. superdown

Thanks, but I don't care about recoil, nothing can be worse than a 12ga slug which I own, when compared to magnums in the 30 caliber range.  Even my 444 marlin seems like a 22 compared to my 12 ga slug.

My question really has to do with velocity when comparing a 300WSM shot from a long action like in a Tikka or in a true short action like a Sako.  I can't seem to find where I read about the difference between the two actions with the same round but I remember reading about it?

The WSM may have slight velocity edge considering they don't cut as far into the bbl for the chamber if barrel length is equal also if you reload you won't have to seat the bullets as deep giving you more usable powder space. besides the difference in velocity between the two is negligible no animal will ever tell the difference .

IMHO the 300 mags are way worse than any 12ga slug I've shot from my 870. i sure wouldn't want to develope a flinch .  since you don't mind the recoil from the 12ga you will probably be comfortable with something that has more of shove than snap I've never shot a 444. but have shot many rounds of 45-70 and that round definitely shoves ya. superdown
