223 Rem to 225 win
« on: May 14, 2008, 08:45:54 AM »
I just took my brand New re-chambered 225 Winchester Handi barrel to the range. LOOKING real good. I has a real loud bang, kind of surprised me. Didn't take long to get the ear plugs out. Shooting under an inch at 50 yards....

HUH? WHAT WAS THAT?

Good to hear that you had a good start with your new rifle.  Even better to hear, period.  Wear hearing protection ALWAYS!

I have 2 Winchester rifles in 225. Both are very accurate and I am getting velocities reasonably close to the 22-250. At least close enough that no woodchuck will ever tell.

Hello Kenbev, Question; Did you ejector or just Modify? I did Hornet to 219 Zipper.
Changed ejector to 30-30. It will do almost as good 22-250. Good shooting.

Don't want to hijack this thread but curiosity has got me.  I've seen a few posts of folks going to the Zipper and am wondering why they didn't select one of the 22/30-30 improved cartridges.  Ackley, ICL and a few others made versions that outstep the Zipper and are within 100 FPS of the 22-250.  The downside I see is having to form the brass as modern Zipper brass will not form without splitting nearly every case even when using cornmeal and a Unique or Bullseye forming charge.

I too have several 225s.
A WIN mode 70 standard barrel
A WIN model 70 heavy varmint barrel
A WIN model 670 standard barrel
A REM model 30S express custom with a 28" varmint barrel
A ENCORE with a custom 26" BULLBERRY heavy barrel
and a HANDI 223 re-chamber
All of these will shoot under an inch with factory ammo at 100yd
The WIN model 70 standard will do under 3/4" most of the time
The BULLBERRY has done 5 shots covered by a dime but usually does 5 under a quarter
I have not shot the HANDI yet, hope it shoots an inch or better
I want to load some 52gr BTHP using BLC-2 powder and see how they do
You will like the round and like the others have said the chucks and hogs won't know the difference between it and the 250!

Datil,
I am sure that the gunsmith said that the ejector was not modified. He said that it was a little tight and pushed toward the top of the chamber. A few passes with a file would correct this...

The reason I went with the 219 zipper was I already had 219 Zip dies.
Picked them up at a gun show or garage sale for about $5.oo years ago
Did not have problems with 25-35 brass reforming , Did with 30-30 brass.
I have never had a split neck in forming brass.
  My 2 cents. Datil
