scope question
« on: May 07, 2008, 04:03:10 PM »
im looking at getting a 6" gp100 and i want to put a scope on it i was thinking about the bsquare mount with either a burris 2x20 or the weaver 2x28(im leaning more towards the burris). i never had a weaver or a burris would there be any problems with either of them standing up to a .357 with heavy loads (buffalo bore, corbon etc) also what size rings to get? i'm asuming lows with the burris because theirs no front bell and mediums with the weaver? thanks

What do you plan on hunting with this gun/scope?  I have a problem with 2x scopes making the target LOOK smaller. This causes an aiming problem for ME,you may not have the same issues. Smaller critters like ground hog and squirrels are quite small already. Your use of HEAVY loads conjures up visions of deer in your sights. You do NOT need super heavy loads for deer in MY opinion. They will cause more recoil that will wear on you ,the gun AND the scope. I have over half a dozen Burris scopes on handguns and rifles, they have never given me any problems. Weaver and Simmons cheaper grade scopes have! Buy the best that you can afford.

If your just getting started with handguns and must have a scope I would recommend you get no more than  2X. Handgun scopes have a very small field of view and it1s harder to find your target in them than it is a rifle scope.
Unlike jhalcott, I have had problems with 4 out of the 5 Burris handgun scopes I`ve owned. Mine were all variable. I personally buy only Leupold scopes now days. Another thing, I would recommend high rings no matter what scope you get. The reason is the high rings makes it easier to cock the hammer and you will wan to shoot single action when hunting.

sachel, either of those scopes will do just fine on your gp. my buddy has had the weave 2x on his smith for 20+years and she still holds zero.

the only other thing i would suggest is make your choice soon ,install the scope and start practicing now. that way you will better prepared by the time deer season arrives.

lastly, you might look at midway, they have a weaver no drill mount, and it got some pretty good reviews, and you might check brownells they may a no drill mount. here's my mount on my gp,unfortunately they are no longer available. good luck and good shootin dan

True, it will take a lot of practice... true also, the 2x makes things look smaller for me.... with the adjustable scope on my encore, I go from higher to lower power.. and the higher is best.. I do best with a larger objective than the 20mm though... you can learn to use anything, but I just find the 2x most difficult... the leupolds 2 and 4 x and other much cheaper scopes have not given me problems... burris 2-7 works best due to the larger objective than the leupolds that I have. dk

This is just my opinion....    The range at which the 357 is efficient for deer, you don't really need much magnification.   I would lean more toward a red dot of some sort.  On deer (w/a high end) 180gr bullet your only talking about 30yds for deer.  Much farther of course for plinking or woodchucking.

30 yards? where did that come from? inside 75 yards and a .357 slug through the lungs and ill have a dead deer

sach ,this should take you to a 1.5-4x scope that JUST might fill your needs.

Good luck with your Burris. People keep telling me how good they are, but I`ve had alot of bad luck with them myself.

Did you opt for the B-Square Mount?  Myself, I would opt for the Weigand mount but that would require a drill and tap...Any competent gunsmith could do one.  IMO, the Weigand looks better too...I don't plan on scoping my 6"GP100 but if I ever consider it, the Weigand will be the way I am going to go.
