Good thing I'm single!
« on: May 06, 2008, 08:46:51 AM »
I just got back from the local shop. I had some empty space in the gun cabinet here, and noticed the 38-55 calling to me again, its been there for quite some time and i got him to drop the price from 299.99 to 225.00. I thought it was a good deal. I pick it up next thursday. It doesnt have the factory sights, but does have a scope rail. what kind of scope would you guys recommend? I will mainly use it for plinking. So let me know what you guys think. Think it was a good deal? one so sweet, to not pass up?

Ya better do a little research on the 38-55 Target Hank, if it's an older barrel, it won't be fun to handload for as is, the 2007 barrels have better chamber necks tho, but you'll still need to load .380" or bigger cast bullets for it, older barrels have chamber necks too tight to load bullets big enough to shoot accurately, be prepared to ream the neck if it's was made before 2007.  There's a link to a good article on cast bullets in the 38-55 in the FAQs. Do a search here for posts by John Boy, Handirifle, JPH45 and Cheatermk3, you'll get all the info you can stand on loading for the Target. ;)

Hey thanks Tim! So you think its worth that much? I figured either way i could always turn around and sell the barrel, or the gun for that matter but it will be nice to have an extra receiver layin around.

$225 is a great price, I just paid $304 for a new one in Feb, but it has a decent chamber and bore compared to pre '07 models which can be a bit frustrating. :'(

Even if it is an older unit - a reamer can be rented to fix the chamber.

A 38-55 "long" reamer should clear it up - and Starline makes the "long" brass for a lil more oomph.
