« on: October 20, 2008, 02:58:48 PM »
anyone have any loads they like with varget powder with 150 bullets  in 30-06 in both 760 and 742
I found some info that says varget is a good powder in these ?

I have used 4064 in the past but I am out and I would like to use varget as my new powder.

Kurt:  this is too easy.....51 gns of Varget under a 150 gn slug gives you 2975'/sec.  This load data is printed right on the label on the container of Varget powder.

One nice benefit of purchasing Hodgedons (sp?) powder is that the labels on the containers have load data that provides for some very accurate loads.  Every load I have used that Hodgedons has provided has been very accurate in my rifles.

thanks mikey I will give that a try and work around 51.0 ballpark and see how it does.
this range should cyle a 742 ok as well ? any one know for sure? I am thinking it should as
it is around 4064 closer than 4350 but i have read that some get the 4350 to work ok in a 742
but as before i would like to try varget.thank for any info.kurt

mtbugle:  I would think that Varget load would work your 760.  I doubt Hodgedons would recommend a load that would only function in one type of rifle without some sort of caveat.

And 4350 is a very good powder for the 06 and semi-autos.  My old Lyman manual lists a 'factory velocity duplication load' with 58 gns of 4350 for 2900'/sec.  One of my favorites with 4350 duplicates the national match loading for M1 Garands using 47.5 gns with a 180 gn bullet (mil-spec bullet was 173 gn).
