My next re-chamber
« on: May 01, 2008, 07:54:07 AM »
I have been thinking again  :o I have about 150 pieces of 357 Max brass that came out too short to use as 224GNR cases , so I said - self what are you going to do with these  ::) and that started the search for a round bases on the 357 mag case .

Did a little looking and found the 22 Rem Jet and as H&R used to make a jet it should fit the bill just fine , I have an extra 20" 22 mag barrel that should work great for the donor , if S&W could get 2000fps from a 8 3/8" barrel I should be able to get around 2400fps from the 20" with 40 grain bullets .

I know that the jet was done in a .222 dia bullet but if i get a .224 expander ball all should be good , I can pick up a set of Hornady dies with form , sizer and seater for around $80 new or maybe a used set for about 1/2 that , I can kill 2 birds with 1 toss , get a new chamber and use my screw-ups at the same time . What do you all think of my idea ? Give me some input .

The 22 Hornet comes to mind but I have a wanted to try a 22 Jet. Let me know how your project works out.   Doug

No problem Doug , I got an e-mail off the Wayne to see what he thinks of the idea , as he will be doing the work if this pans out . I also was thinking that he may have to run a 223 rem throat reamer down the chamber to open up that area for the larger bullet dia. we'll see what he says .

Sounds like another fun project Stimpy. I would think that it should handle 45 grain and lower bullets without a hitch.

Cannon6 - My first Handi was a 223 Ultra. They have all been rimmed since. 357, 30-30, 44 mag, 444 Marlin and 22 Hornet. Thinking about that 45-70 Ultra may be my next one - Who knows. ;D

Shane

About the only 2 guys that I use anymore are Wayne York and Gary Reeder , they both do great work at a desent price , ny local guy does not do anything anymore ( retired ) . spends most of his time fishing on lake erie .  ;D

Wayne did my Bee for less than $150 and that covered the shipping both ways and only needed the barrel , while Gary was just a few $s higher and wanted the whole rifle so he could test fire it to make sure everything was good before shipping it back to me .

Got an e-mail from Wayne this morning and it looks like the project is a go , the price is good too , should come in at under $150 with shipping both ways . Turn around time will be about 8 weeks , so look fro a range report about early to mid June .  ;)

Now to get dies and start forming and loading rounds .  ;D

Shane

The 22 Remington Jet is a 357 mag reformed and necked down to .222 but in this case I'm going down to .224 so I can use bullets that I get for my 218 Bee , mostly 35 & 40 grain V-max .

http://stevespages.com/page8d.htm

A little bigger than the 22 Hornet and 218 Bee but smaller than my 224 GNR . and with the 1 in 16 twist of the 22 mag barrel it should do well with the lighter bullets .

Stimpy, I was going thru boxes of old odds and ends ammo yesterday at the shop where I went to pick up a Handi.  There's two  factory boxes of Jets there.  If you want them, I'll snag them for you.  The ammo in that box is about half price.    I have no idea what they're worth, but if you tell me, I'll have something to go on.  The shop is 75 miles away, so I don't get there every day.  I'm sure the Jets will still be there when I get over there in a couple of weeks.  I'll PM you later.  Pete

Best of luck Stimpy. I have wanted a .22 Rem Jet in a Handi for quite a while myself. I saw a .22 Rem Jet barrel on E-bay a couple of years ago but it went for so much it was criminal!!! I will follow this thread with interest, be sure to keep us posted. Perhaps Wayne will make more than yours if all works out well....<><....:)

Shane

Ya my 218 was a 22 mag in 20" with a 1-16 twist , and it still shoots the 50 grain bullets ok but does best with 35's & 40's . Thats another reason I'm going to use one for this round .
