45/70bc or 22"45/70
« on: April 28, 2008, 06:42:04 AM »
i have a 22" 45/70 handi and im thinking about getting a bc 45/70 barrel . iwas thinking about having it cut to 26 or 28 inches and recrowned  . has anyone done this ? it seems to me that it would make the gun a little more shooter friendly with a little more weight out front and maybe a little easier to hold steady compared to the 22" barrel. i was also wondering what kind of velocity gain adding a couple inches of barrel would add. any advice would be appreciated.   thanks

GURU

I've had both a 22" and the 36" BC barrels , I happen to like the 22" better , as for FPS I didn't see that much diffrence in MY loads from one to the other , maybe thats the reason the BC left and the Handi barrel is still here .

I was thinking about the same thing.  The 22" barrel is a little short, and the BC barrel is too long.  When I considered the cost just to get a few extra inches/FPS, I decided it wasn't worth the money.  Besides the 22" barrel is so maneuverable in the woods.  If I didn't already have a 22", I might consider the BC barrel and cutting it down to 26" or so.

I had a Buffalo Classic.I then purchased a regular Handi in 45/70.I could find no difference in the accuracy of them so I sold the BC.Four inches longer than a Handi or six inches shorter than a BC won't make any difference.

The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

I guess it comes down to personal preferance......I chopped off my BC at 26" to mirror my Huntsman muzzle loader.
I recrowned it using the appropriatly shaped sand stone on the end of my electric drill. I shoot 415 gr cast bullets at
around 1800 fps. I love it....everthing just falls down

I am with stimpy and the rest. I have both but I shoot the 22 incher much more. In fact, I haven't shot the bc at all this year and I am thinking that she may need a new home. I have to admit that my 22 incher is more accurate as well.
