Vent rib pros and cons?

Can you guys tell me the benefits of a vent rib?  I've been shooting fixed choke 410, 20, and 12's.  the bigger ones kick pretty bad but hit what i point 'em at.  I've been thinking of getting a barrel w screw in chokes - should it have a vent too, and why?  ab

Vent ribs are a sighting aid in that they prevent heat rays fom distorting the bead picture. Firing a single shot fast enough to cause heat distortion keeps tou busy. They are hard to keep clean for a field-work gun. Aesthetics and appearance make them nice, but practice can overcome the lack of one. Really boils down to personal taste.

for me it sounds like a non vent w screw in chokes will be best.  thanks, ab

Vent ribs allow for easy mounting of sights.  ;)

I believe vent ribs provide a dramatically better sight line.  I wouldn't own a gun without one.  Of course I don't shoot the single shot guns so my experience is limited to pumps, autos, and doubles.  It might help to note how many modern guns are made today without a vent rib... almost none.
