.357 MAX rechamber
« on: April 05, 2008, 03:23:55 PM »
Just sent my SB2, 2007 Model Year, frame to NEF for a .357 Mag barrel.
Who does the best rechamber to .357 MAX?
I have heard that (censored) does a good job, but not real sure if he does NEF. Also not real sure I want to try him.
Other options? Thought about renting a reamer, but with my luck with mechanical stuff lately, I could destroy a vice with a rubber mallet.
Don't really want to mess this up.
Suggestions appreciated.

Do it yourself. This is probably the easies thing you can do to a handie, Makes for a fine rifle also, I just wish other rechambers would be this easy. Do it man do it.

Try the long factory chamber as is first using 360 DW brass and loads, you may be happy as is.

Do it yourself, easy done in 15 minutes. just take it slow, use lots cutting oil.
 Then use 357 Max,360 DW, 357 Mag, 38 spl's . I have heard 360 D W has
giving a lot problems, Spliting brass. I did mine right after I got it, never
 looked back. Marv.

I have thought of doing this too, for a reamer would you use a chamber reamer or a throat reamer?

Chamber reamer, the throat is already plenty long.

These are before and after chamber casts. You'll notice that only a very little metal was removed from the H&R .357 mag chamber to make it a .357 Max.

The hardest part of the job for me was finding where the kids had put the T-handle I needed for the reamer.  I never did find it, I ended up borrowing a handle from one of the kids.  And no, it didn't look familiar..  LOL

I've been thinking about doing this also, but in my Hornady manual it doesn't give any .357 Max rifle data to compare to .357mag.

What is the typical velocity gain you guys are getting with 180gr bullets?

I get 2000fps+ with 180gr hard cast GCFPs I could probably get more outta jacketed rounds but I like cast and those 180s at 2000fps flat knock a deer silly.

I really want to take a 357 out to the max, but have a small problem, (well more than one).  Every time I try to measure, fix or repair something, I have to redo it over.  Can't do that on a barrel, so is it really that easy to do, or should I take it to a gunsmith? ???  DP.

Well, I consider it very easy to do but I've worked on guns and machinery all my life and I know that some people can't be trusted with a sharp stick. In reality, because it is easy to do, I doubt that a gunsmith would charge you much more than it would cost to rent a reamer and do it yourself and the confidence of knowing it is done right is worth something in itself. ;D

Hey DP, It really is that easy. You do not have to measure any thing, and you can't go to far. The reamer pilots in the bore of the barrel and the reamer has a stop cut in it that will stop it from cutting when you reach the rim recess of the chamber. It took longer to unpack the tools than to ream out the chamber.  Because the Max its a rimed cartridge this is a very easy job.

I just about guarantee if you do this yourself you'll like it better, because the sense of accomplishment is a strong feeling I think everyone enjoys. At least I know I do, And I really enjoy shooting my Max.

Ya'll done convinced me......
As soon as I get my barrel from NEF, I will just have to rent a MAX reamer and do the thing myself.
Might as well rent a 454 Casull reamer for my 45 Colt barrel while I'm at it.

I got my starline  360 brass and Hornady Sp 180 yesterday loaded a few today with 16,5 gr of 296 and 180 gr.  The first one did not eject so I shot it and put it thought the sizing die than no problem sized the rest seated to cannalure and all loaded and ejected fine.  I had to change nose punch on seating die.  I need some good weather to chronograph and check for accuracy.
