planning on getting a ultra hunter .308
« on: April 07, 2008, 09:44:41 PM »
Hey all

I'm planning on getting a ultra hunter in .308 for longer range deer/caribou hunting etc. I do own a Long Range 12 H&R shotgun (which is old but awesome), but I've never owned a H&R rifle. In Europe (I'm from Norway), there's this "rule" that breech loading rifles are supposed to be chambered for rimmed cartridges cause it makes for a more solid ejector/extractor mechanism.

I've heard that the newer H&R rifles (post 2007) have a new and improved extractor which eliminates problems with rimless cartridges? I'm sure this have been a topic in this forum before, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me a bit more about it. How does it work? Do the cartridge ever get stuck? Is there a difference between the mechanism for rimmed cartridges? etc

Some close up pics of the post 2007 rifle extractor would be appreciated!!

Hello.  I own several Handi Rifles.  Some are extractor and others are ejector.  I prefer the extractor, they're new manufacture, and I have never experienced a problem with them.  I'm planning to convert the ejectors to extractor in the near future.  My .308 is a Ruger M77 MKII, not a Handi.  I love the rifle and the caliber.  I've taken, fox, coyotes, woodchucks and deer, some of each out to 300 yards.  I get the best accuracy with 168 gr. Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tips, and for serious hunting, I shoot nothing else.  I think you'll love both the Handi Rifle and the .308 caliber.  Welcome, good hunting and shooting.  Pete

Welcome! Spend some time reading in the FAQs and Help sticky, there are pics of extractors, there are also tips on making ejectors work well.
