Hello
If it is an original Square butt configuration model 29 Houge Grips will be Larger than what the original Target grips are he has now. I am not familiar with any Grip manufacturers that make smaller than Factory fitted S&W Grips. I recently Placed a set of Vintage Walter Roper grips on my model 25-2 which is the large-N-frame as I too am Not a Lover of Large grips and the Ropers were very slim and comfortable. Walter Roper Built comfortable shooting grips for the camp perry shooting Teams in the Mid to late 1930's to around 1945 and this Pair is one of them. He used to require a Pencil Tracing of your hand before making them all by Hand. here is how they Look. Regards, Hammerdown

Pachmayr does or at least did make two sizes of Presentation grips for the N-frame a small and a large. If you can find the small size that might be what your friend needs. I'm pretty sure Midsouth Shooter's Supply stocks them.

Hello Adirondacker
The Grips shown are the most Comfortable grip I have ever placed in my hand. Matheis Gagne was The Artisan who made all the Roper custom grips for Walter Roper back in the 1930-1940 Time span. He was remarkable as far as Talent went, he used a simple V-Chisel to do all his Famous Clover Leaf checkering on these style grips. Most of his grips went to shooting Team members and had to be special ordered. he made them all Wafer thin to allow the shooter complete, comfortable control of the Larger-N-Sq. Frame revolvers. Grip's like these do Not come along often as they stayed with the guns they were Intended for. I Lucked out on this pair as they were on a  newer model 27 revolver in .357 Magnum and the seller wanted an Original set of factory target grips so we swapped. i am certain he did not know what he had as they are Rarely seen, but he did not like nor want them, so it was all that much better for me. This is my Second Pair of Roper grips as I Located another set years ago on a model 17 K-22 revolver and had to Buy the gun to get the grips. I hope you find smaller grips for that model 29 but it will be tough Locating a set in the larger Target style. Here is my Other set of Ropers Currently on my pre-16 K-32 masterpiece. I replaced my "Plow Handles" on my 29 with some Hogue "Mono Grips".  I keep the originals for show, but use these grips to facilitate the use of speed loaders for IDPA. Not a good picture, it's a camera phone shot, but all I have at the moment.
