New to me Valmet 412 30.06/30.06 question

Hi to all,
I am new to this forum, and new to double rifles.  I was on vacation in Hot Springs when a Valmet 412 caught my eyes.  It came in 30.06 over 30.06.  It has the scope mounts and rings, but no scope.  Over all a clean rifle that appears to have had little use.  I hope to scope it and take it to the range soon for a test shoot.    The one negative is the barrel adjusting wedge in the middle has had the screw heads buggered a little. 

How important is the above wedge to be tight.  I understand it is for the adjustment of the zero of the two barrels.

My one wish is a barrel set in 9.3x74r over 9.3x74r.  How hard are these to find?  How much is the going rate?  Do they have to be custom fit to my receiver, or do they just go right on?  I don't have to have the barrel for anything that I currently hunt, but I would like to go on an African hunt one day with my Brother.  I know 30.06 will handle most game animals, but I like the information that I have read on the 9.3x74r.  I have been a gun collector for the past 30 years and odd ball things interest me.   I my oddest to date is a Chauchat  that I need to get finished with and take it shooting.

You have a great gun.  You should look at double triggers.  I have that gun and found it shoots the 165 gr Federal and Winchester ammo well.  I waisted some time screwing around with trying to regulate the barrels for both the 150gr and 165gr ammo.

The middle screw which regulates the elevation is very important when regulating the gun.

9.3x74r/9.3x74r Valmet are very hard to find.  Marconi (sp) in Italy still makes them but they are not the same as the Valmet.  All barrels should be fitted for your receiver.

This was a pure impulse buy.  I have looked at double rifles on the Internet for years, but we all know their prices.  I am right handed, but due to an eye problem, I taught myself to shoot left handed.  The Valmet that I bought felt like it was made for me to shoot left handed.  I am a large man at 6-2 and 260, so the size and weight did not feel awkward.  The place was being enlarged and remodeled, so I threw him an offer of $825 cash and he said why not.  After paying sales tax it came up to almost $900.   It was at the end of the day and this was one of several that he got from someone that was going out of business, or trimming their inventory.  I don't remember for sure which.  I knew that it could be a 100 or two high, but it could also be quite a bit lower.  Most Of my buys have been studied to death.  From walking in and out of the door on this one was about 20 minutes.  I also knew that having the scope rings would save quite a bit for this style of rifle.

I am happy with the rifle, but I sure wish you had better news on the 9.3x74r barrels.

That is a very fair price and when you add the scope mount it is a very good price.

If you are looking for Valmet 9.3x74r double rifle set check out Cabelas gun room, they have a gun for sale with 5 barrels, maybe they will sell one. 

Did he have any other Valmet 412 shotguns or rifles?

Yes, he had 12/12 and 30.06/12.

Best I remember, he had the price tag on these at 1500 and 2100.  Mine had the tag at 1090.00. 

Don't quote me on the above prices, but they were considerably higher than mine, and I don't know, there may have been another barrel set involved.  When I found the double 30.06, I kinda quit paying attention.  I like the round a lot.  To long for to days youngsters, but very effective.
