accurate .22 bolt actiion
« on: March 16, 2008, 04:21:25 PM »
A few years back i bought a CZ 512 basic  which of course is a plain jane  CZ bolt action .22 long  rifle. The trigger was stiff but  after some shooting it lightened up somwhat. I like the accuracy, and after years of center fires i love how quit and easy on my ears it is. I decieded in  time i would get a nicer .22 like the CZ american. They run about 350.00 or 395.00 in my area.
If you can find one. The question i have is are there any other .22's in this price range that can compare in accuracy  and quality to the CZ. I am not dissassifed with the CZ at all. In fact i have a hard time imagineing there is another .22 of this quality for the money, but i thought i would seek others opinons before I make the move.
Are there any others .22's in this price range that can compare to the CZ ?? Accuracy is my number one priorty as well as a modest price.

If your talking "new", i'd say on the average... no.  But, i'm sure there are cheaper guns that will shoot that good,  but maybe just not quite as "nice" of a gun though?  And, you know the old adage..."beauty is in the eye of the beholder"...

CZ rimfires are known for their accuracy....it's very rare that one gets by that isn't superb.

Many other rimfire makers can make a rifle just as accurate, for a bit less money....but the fit and finish isn't as nice, and they seem to put out a few more "lemons" or "average" rifles. It's hard to beat a CZ for the money.

Ammunition choice can make a HUGE difference on accuracy as well...

I bought the .452 american in .22 L.R. No complaints. Its a little smoother than the 512 and has the same accuracy.
Small varmints have a reason to hide. Now I   need a .22 magnum and then i am done buying guns until i hit the lotto.

I know that the CZ is very popular but you might try the marlin 981T dime size groups at 50 yds and half the cost of most CZ rifles. And runs longs, shorts and LR. Also has a 15 round magazine.

I am quite partial to Savage's so the would be my advice. I own a couple and plan on owning more in the near future. Got rid of a model 110 that I am still hoofing myself for.

They never let me down and ALWAYS fave me good groups out if the box. Best part is they only get better!

That I very much doubt and I spend quite a bit of time over at Rimfire central where there is a Mossberg crowd  ;) Recently I ahve been spending time playing around with my .22LR rifles and trying out various different ammo types through them from the bench. This has resulted in my deciding that for genral practice I will be using CCI Blazer, proper target shooting will be Eley Match EPS. Hunting using the sound moderator (Silencer) is with Winchester Sub Sonics (these are Australian made) for hunting rabbits without a sound moderator is either CCI Velocitors or Federal American Eagle HP's.

During my testing at 25 meters the Winchester Subs thorugh my old BSA Super Sport Five (Cicra 1956) that has had the barrel shortened to 16 1/2" and threaded 1/2" UNF for the moderator shots tight little groups, one ragged hole and soem not so ragged. The best I have managed so far is 0.197" four shot group. Four shots because I was trying it out for the Cheap ammo challange over at Rimfire Central. Four shot groups of 0.300" are quite common, the rifle has a 4.5x14x50AO scope fitted, another (Later) BSA Super Sport Five (1961) has an unaltered barrel and fitted with a 4x32 scope and shoots just as well, my intention is to find some high mounts and swop the 4.5-14x50AO scope onto this rifle and thenreall see if it shoots as tightly. The 4x scope slightly handicaps a real meaniful comparision of the two. My 1965 vintage Brno Model 2 also shoots tiny groups and that only has a Weaver K3W on it.

I very much doubt that a Mossberg would better that and yes Brno was once linked with CZ and the differences between a CZ 452 and the Brno Model 2 are mainly in appearence the magazines are interchangable as it seems are firing springs, not sure about other parts as mine had needed none although I did buy a new 10 shot magazine for it just after acquiring it. They originally have a 5 shot clip.

Have only done very limited testing at 100 meters and it was then that a friend gave me some of the velocitors to try and they shot a group of around an inch and that was using a 3x scope. hopefully I get back there and try out the big scope and see how they rifle performs with them at 100 meters.

It is difficult to beat either the Remington 540 or 580 series rifles.  If you have a couple of bucks a target 540 is very nice, I have two 580's (581 & 582) one is a 22 Hornet CF conversion the other unaltered.  Hard to think any other mass produced 22 could be much better.  Larry

I bought a 581 a few years ago at a farm auction.  It was ugly: full of barn paint and rust (not to mention the bird droppings).  I got it for next to nothing, and it came with a cigar box full of mixed lose ammo and the ice pick the farmer had used to pry the empties out of the chamber.  You should see all the scratches.  After a good cleaning it looks pretty good, and I replaced the extractors and it works well.  I have an old Japanese Tasco 3-9 by 40 scope on it.

When it is shot on paper it is not exceptional, but for some reason it seems much better used on game.  My oldest son and I have brought home pot fulls of game with it over the years, and it is likely to be the one we take when we go small game hunting.  When I saw your post I had to take it out of the safe and look at it.  Needs to have the stock re-finished this winter I think...
