New H&R big bore convert
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:02:34 AM »
Hey guys, since my last post on GBO I’ve had the chance to try out my new H&R 444 Marlin on feral hogs. A friend of mine has converted some of his cropland in the Mississippi delta to tree farming. Trouble is feral hogs were destroying the seedlings. After contacting the local game warden he was granted permission (because of crop damage) to thin them out. He invited me to come along and give him a hand. Neither of us had hunted hogs before. He was armed with a 30-30 Winchester shooting 150gr. Rem ammo.  And I with my almost new H&R 444  shooting 240gr. Rem ammo. Since we were inexperienced with this type hunting (hogs) we figured it would be best to hunt from the old deer tree stands he had around the fields.

At 8:30am that morning I heard a shot from the adjoining field. I assumed my friend had shot his hog. Then I heard 3 more shots in quick succession. I thought to myself, “He’s trying to clean out the whole herd by himself”.  In less than minute a group of hogs came splashing through the low marshy ground to my left. I picked out what appeared to be the biggest and touched off the shot. The hog spun around twice and went down not 6 feet from the spot where it was first hit.

Later that morning my friend and I met up to compare notes on the hunt. He had fired 4 shots (all good hits) into just one hog trying to put it down for keeps. Where as one shot from my 444 had put my hog down. He asked to see my H&R rifle and spend a good 15 minutes checking it over. Then he asked about the recoil. I handed him a shell and said try it for himself. He shot a rotten stump about 30 yards away and blew a fist size hole in it. From the look on his face I could tell he was a convert to big bore rifles.

That same night I got an unexpected call from him. He was at Wal-Mart. He said they didn’t have any 444’s but they did have a marked down 45-70 for $224 plus tax. I told him to grab it.

Nice report and good shootin!! Not to lessen the effectiveness of a big bore, but since neither of you have hunted hogs, here's a little primer on hog anatomy, it's not uncommon from all I've read that a lot of hog hunters, veterans too,  aren't real familiar with how a hog is built, they aren't like a deer which is what most think.  ;)

Great story gaileyr, and welcome aboard. I have hunted hogs in Texas once before and really want to do it again. The last time I did we used our longbows and homemade wooden arrows. My partner did carry a stoutly loaded S&W .44 Mag with his own reloads of a hardcast flatpoint Kieth design bullet.
Hogs and a big bore H&R/NEF, it don't get any better than that!!!....<><....:)

Glad to share, now if I can just put the info to use!! :D There are some feral hogs here in Washington and also in Oregon, but they're hard to find and very small, localized populations. I quess that's good from the perspective of the habitat, but not for hunters. :-X

Hey Tim, an up date on my previous post. I stopped by the Wal-Mart where my friend bought his H&R 45-70. I was checking to see if they had another 45-70 at the same price ($224). They were sold out (Bummer). Anyway, the young man behind the counter was very knowledgeable about firearms and we got into a discussion about the impact of Mississippi’s ruling on the use of H&R firearms during primitive weapons season. For those unfamiliar with this ruling It goes something like this; Any single shot center fire rifle 38 caliber or above that has an exposed hammer and was designed or built  before 1900 is legal during Mississippi’s primitive weapons season.

According him, this ruling has had a huge impact on sales of H&R rifles in this area. To prove his point he pulled up a master list of local region Wal-Mart gun sales in the last year. The list showed over 300 H&R rifles had been sold. He claimed to have personal knowledge of people he knew (customers) abandoning the use 30-06, 308, 7mm-08, etc, etc in favor of the H&R big bore rifles for all their deer hunting (regular and primitive weapons seasons).

Now, I would call that a marked turn around from the norm for this area. When I first started hunting all you saw in the woods was 30-30 Winchesters. A few years later it was high-powered bolt actions. Now it seems people have rediscovered again the value of moderate speed big bore rifles. Funny how over time things always seem to gravitate back to basics.

BTW… He offered me a great deal on one of the high powered 300mag Vanguards he had left on the shelf. Told him I would have to pass.

Yes, we know, if you do a search for Mississippi, you'll see the primitive season has been discussed a lot. Not only has MS caused a resurgence of H&R popularity, but so has the pistol chambered rifle deer season in Indiana, the SB1 357 and 44 mags and shotgun combo production was prompted by that need. H&R/Marlin also arose and met the challenges to maintain production that the MS and IN seasons demanded of them, the big bore chamberings were in short supply for a while in late 2005 and 2006, but they've done well to catch up to the need, take a look at the inventory levels at RR Arms.  ;)
