Does H&R make a 6mm Rem?
« on: February 08, 2008, 03:45:40 AM »
Was curious if any of you guys new if H&R ever made a 6mm Remington?  If not, could a guy just have a 243 rechambered and cut for a 6mm case? and how much does a job like that cost on average?

I wish they did!  I don't think there is enough material in a .243 to go to 6MM.

The one area I was worried about was the base of the shoulder.  On a 243 the base is .025 larger then a 6mm, but the 6mm is a little longer at the shoulder.  I seen on other forums where guys are doing it, but they are not break open so I am not sure what exactly they are doing.  Maybe they are just not worried about it and then after fire forming brass just neck sizing?

To clean up a 243 chamber on a single shot, you'd need to rechamber to 6mm Improved since the barrel is fixed and can't be set back as on a bolt rifle, there's a thread in the FAQs on this subject, it's been discussed numerous times, the search feature is your friend. ;)

Here is for the folks who can't understand a "no" with out a picture.
You would end up with a chamber with 2 shoulders.

The forgotten gem, the 6 mm Remington in a slow twist makes a great varmint/predator round and with a faster twist for heavier bullets it's a great combination cartridge for varmints to deer. I would like to own the former for ground hogs at 400-500 yards. JMHO ;D

Thanks Tim for the insight.  I may just be missing it, can't find the post you are talking about in the FAQ's thread, can you post a link of it for me?  Sorry I can not find it.  I have been reading on this today and the more I read I find different directions.  I found a site that talked just about what you mentioned exactly Tim.  I am finding it would be better to just go with a 243 AI and still have a 4% capacity gain over a 6mm.  And would assume a by the dimensions a 243 AI can be cut in a 243 W just fine correct?

I spend alot of time on other forums, and sorry I do not spend a bunch of time on this one.  But one thing you should keep in mind is it may be the 100th time you have talked about it, but the first for me.  Forums are for sharing and seeking new knowledge.  Sorry the question I ask is redundant to you.

I think you're misunderstanding skifastchad's reply, he's just saying a picture is worth a thousand words.  ;)

My bad memory on the 6mm Remington thread in the FAQs, it's on the 6mmAI and titled "Handlloading for an Improved Chambered Handi".  :-[

Thanks Tim, that is exactly what I meant.  I was not calling anyone's question redundant.  I just thought a graphical representation would make more sense than people describing diameters at the shoulder and neck.  I have tried to explain it to people before (not on a forum)  after explaining the diameter difference, they always come back with the reply of a 4 year old "but why?" .  Some people need a picture to SEE that it doesn't work.

Yes, your graphic is the best I've seen, even a cartridge diagram of each round doesn't help much when they can't be overlayed, althought dimensions can help "visualize" the problem area of the rechamber if the learnee can wrap his head around it, then throw in the fixed barrel vs threaded barrel and it gets complicated!! :D
