FA 83 scope mounts
« on: February 15, 2008, 02:05:13 PM »
Hi All,

I have the Leupold scope mount for my FA83. It is quite solid, but slow to mount and dismount. I find I have to take the scope out of the rings to get to the monunting screws, and this is time consuming and the scope has to be completely re-zeroed each time. Mostly I like to shoot with iron sights, but will put the scope on to accuracy test new handloads. I would like something easier on and off for a quick check of group size - and them back to iron sights.

I would like something quicker and more convenient to mount and dismount. Is the Lovell scope mount easier in this respect, or are they all about the same?

Any closeup pictures on the web of this one?

Thanks,
Tom

there are many quck detach mounts that return to zero when put back on the weapon.. Warne tactical, is one brand.. also look on midway... there are qwik attach levers for adding onto your existing mounts (don't know about them.) heard good things about the detachables and there are all kinds used by the tactical boys like on sniper's hide, etc. .... they mount them on rifles with good results.
hope this helps.

Sorry but I don't think what you are looking for exists. You have to realize that they all use the mounting holes for the rear sight and that really limits the options. They are gonna be UNDER the scope so the scope is gonna hafta come off to remove the base.

I disagree however with your premise about a major resighting effort each time. The fit is pretty precise and if you'll use a pencil to mark on the scope where it sat in the rings you'll be surprise just how little adjustment will be needed when you put it back on. No it's not a "no adjustment" replacement necessarily but it'll be darn close and you'll not have to make a lot of clicks most likely.

The T'SOB is likely the best option for you. It's a Weaver type that allows you to leave the scope in the rings and just slide it off and then remove the base so that way you don't loosen the rings on the scope. I know of nothing else that even comes close.

The old scope mount Freedom Arms used, if I remember right it had Beuler scope rings, and a mount made by Freedom Arms? I have several of them, none that I want to part. That mount is dead on after removing and reinstalling on any of the guns it has been sighted in with. It is the same mount used in most of the Hunters Special sets. If you can find one give it a try, it was a 100.00 mount back in the 80's.

Steve, I've always found the same thing with the old Buehler mounts.  However twice I sheared the rings off using some very heavy 454 loads that Pete Pi developed for me.  Both times I had to send the guns back to Freedom.  The guns were always fine but Wayne finially  suggested we find a different load.  I still have a couple of boxes of those experimental loads.  That was when I switched to SSK's mounts (and a different load).  At any rate the Buehler mount can be taken off and on and hold its zero
