Heya guys,
Well due to some E-mail problems im having to post under a new name,That aside Me and Jessica (the missus) had a great and exciting hunt in OK.
Took the new 270 WSM with iron sights only and took her handi with the new 223 bull barrel.. Was using the winnie supreme 130s' in the Savage 270 short mag and had the 223 sighted in with the 75 grn Hornady TAP rounds
I knew already what she was wanting , She had her heart set on a nice Texas Dall ram ... And me, I was set on getting a good wall hanger hog
Once we got out into the field ,we worked along a trail for a while till we came to a open grass field spotting a group of rams..Where Jess spotted a beautiful white texian ram ...From my experience it pays to get a good look at your rams horns before you take the animal ,Since they are rams and they like to uhhh well RAM things heh .. So i handed my 270 to the other half and took her scope rifle to get a better look on her animal ,while doing so i noticed a big black animal moving through the tall grass near the group of rams...Then it dawned on me "wait that animal doesnt have any horns " hahaha well that is due to it being one big pig
So i focused in on this hog trying to make a better call on if he was what i was after or not , I quickly noticed "Crap" i was only going to have one chance at him ..there was about a 6 to 7 yards cleared path between the tall grass and the thick cedar and briar cover he was heading back to... well upon this realization i looked over my shoulder to see Jessica was about 20 yards behind me with my rifle, So to quote an old biker saying "Run whatcha brung" So the 223 handi was what i had... As the hog came into the open i decided he was a keeper....I laid the crosshairs where they needed to be and *bang* one 257 pound european Hog on the ground... And a surprised me at the effectivness of the new Hornady TAP rounds .. Granted the pig still had life left in him but he never made it off his back ... Upon closer examination he was one heck of a tusker with alot of character .. the next 4 hours were spent trying to get a clean shot on Jessica's ram ...We were trying to get a video of her taking her ram (brother wanted to see the effectivness of the 223 TAP rounds at work hehe) ... Well my hats off to those realtree boys ,Video taping a hunt looks alot easier then it really is ... In fact its a pain in the ass heh
but after alot of close chances , we talked about it and decided to look around for some of the other groups of rams i knew were in the area
we didnt have any luck finding the other groups ... so as we were heading back through the tall grass field where we had originally spotted her ram and the hog i took , We came in contact with an easy 400 pound hog that ended up after about 10 minutes getting a little closer then i was comfortable with ..close enough that i ended up taking the safety off the 270 thinking i might have to take him if he showed himself to be a threat..
He just went about his merry way, which was fine with us ... Jess asked if we could work around the back side of the woods that we had last seen her group of rams at , so we did
Good Call hunny ... low and behold just as we were about to call it a night , I spotted her white Dall ram in pocket of thick stuff but by himself so i had her stay where she was in case a good opening presented itself, I then walked along the trail another 15 yards and found a pie plate size opening to the animal ... after a quick shuffle and a well placed shot ,She had her ram
Again one shot with the 223 TAP rounds and the deal was sealed
had a couple more exciting run ins with the hogs and another big one i thought i might have to take do to him being closer then i was comfortable with( he had a very menacing way about him) but he backed up and went about his way .....
All in all a good hunt , with the missus...some more meat in the freeze and some good looking mounts for the gun room
