17hmr / 17 k hornet
« on: January 13, 2008, 12:30:20 PM »
Just picked up a 17 hmr barrel today at a local gun show. I already have one in contender as well as 17 rem. Was wondering if any one has done a re-chamber to a 17 k hornet. Looked up past posts and see where several has went the 17 rem. route. Any one see any problems with this caliber? It would be a happy medium in my 17's

Welcome to GBO forums, I don't see why you can not go to K-hornet.
May have to change out the ejector, You should be able to the reaming
yourself. Would not be a hard job. Good luck Marv.

The conversion is possible...The barrel metal in rim fire barrels are different than center fire barrels (a little softer). You definitely do not want to do this by hand. There is just way too much to ream out. I was thinking of going from a 221 Fire Ball to a 222. I only had to ream the chamber .3" or so deeper (not bigger in diameter) to do it. I was strongly advised not to do it, so I didn't. A 22 Hornet extractor/ejector would work just fine. Of course you have to fit the barrel to a frame, buy the dies and form cases too. May be some case annealing involved, but not sure, because the necks are thin to start with. Just a few things to think about.
