Pros and cons of punching out to 45-90?
« on: January 07, 2008, 10:35:55 AM »
From my readings I understand that a short throat is very common on the Buffalo Classic. At least mine is too short for heavier bullets and I want to punch it.  Thinking about going to 45-90 since I have to rent or buy a reamer anyway.

What are the pros AND cons?

The main use for this rifle is serious plinking and hunting.  Thinking about trying black powder.

For black powder there's a definite advantage, but even with smokeless powder, the larger case keeps pressures down, although there isn't any data over about 30kpsi for the 45-90 or bigger, a 45-120 shooting a 500gr bullet with 60gr of H4895 will push it well over 1800fps in my BC at <30kpsi, but in a 45-70, if you throated it, you could do the same thing, but at considerably higher pressure, well into the Ruger levels. Look back a few pages, there are several threads on the 45-90 and bigger rechambers. Throating info can be found in the FAQs along with a reamer rental source if you haven't seen it yet.

You would need to know if the reamer you use has a long taper throat or a short throat. I re-chambered mine to a 45-120 but it still had a very short throat(if you ask Fred he can advise you up front) and I had to throat it with a throating reamer. Also the throating reamer that I got from 4D was meant to do a 45-70 chamber so if you re-chamber to 45-90, 45-100, 45-110, 45-120 you will need to make an extension for the throating reamer. I turned down a drill extension I got at Ace Hardware and it worked fine. Good luck and good shooting. ;)F50
