Tips for shooting accurately.........
« on: December 31, 2007, 05:04:16 AM »
I was just wondering what tips everyone has to shooting accurately preferrably not to be what you do to the gun as those have been covered in the FAQ's but little tricks that everyone does to help them steady their gun.   Me I learned while in the military that if you are shooting prone while on a bipod or bags, put your non trigger hand   (in a lightly clinched fist)  against your armpit and put the lower point of the recoil pad or butt plate in the indention that your pointer finger/thumb makes and use that hand to raise or lower the POA. Squeeze your fist tighter if you want to lower the POA. Or relax your fist to raise your POA. .... Just a little something to try if you would like.    Keep this going as I am always looking for ways to help MYSELF instead of the gun because I know the gun shoots better than I do.  Stu

as for me the thing i find most helpful is breathing technique. when i was a kid i was lucky enough to have learned from a few world class rifle and pistol shooters. i have used their breathing techniques ever since. before every shot i take 2 deep breaths, settle my sights, take one more deep breath in, settle the the sights once again, release HALF of that breath, resettle the sights one last time, squeeze the trigger and follow through. it takes longer to read this than to learn how. the deep breaths also help to even out your heart rate.

Rbergum95 has one of the most necessary movements for accurate shooting. The four major things to do are, Sight Alignment, Breath Control, Trigger squeeze and follow-through. Sight alignment and trigger squeeze being the top two. As a past firearms instructor many students have come up with all kinds of reasons for "missing." We would tell them to watch their sights, they would say they are. We would take the target and turn it backwards so there is nothing for them to "shoot at." They only have the sights to look at. Their group will reduce down to just a couple of inches at 15 yards with a hand gun from 6-10 inch groups. Sight alignment and trigger squeeze..... the two major necessities.
I shoot first, and don't ask questions.

another thing you can do is to have someone load your magazine. Only thing is he/she needs to have a blank/fired round. Load that blank/fired round into the mag along with unfired ammo. shoot as you normally would and see what happens when that blank/fired round comes up .... did you flinch / did the rifle/pistol stay where it should etc etc you get the picture. single shots alittle different i understand. Now Quick could have someone load his arsenaland just hand him a gun at a time to see what he does. Heaven forbid you wait and save the blank till the last few guns it would be hours before he got around to those last few. I would probably have to be mean and make him shoot the heavy hitters first and see if he gets/develops a flinch when it comes time for the 17 .....
