Look for used also, you may find a good deal with good scopes, mounts, etc and it cost the same as the cheap package gun. Buying used is generally better than packages also

Guys, I go along with you about some folks not being as gun savy as we are, but, for 235.00 I couldnt pass up that rem 710 combo gun...like new, only fired several times and pawned and not returned for. Now, the Bushnell scope on the rifle is a cheapie, and I was going to replace it till I looked through it, and it is very clear, has good field of view, and its not broke, lol, I have the rifle sighted in with it and I hunt with it and it is really good in the woods, so I dont see a need to replace it, this combo rifle is the only one I have ever bought, and it is a keeper...rifle shoots very well and the scope for a cheapie is not bad, and works fine, good loaner rifle for my son when he needs to borrow one...Jim ;D

Congrats on the new rifle Jim.  My first rifle was a Savage 110 Package with a 3-9 tasco scope.  I killed 4-5 deer a year with it.  After a couple years I upgraded scopes but I still call the rifle "Old Faithful"  after all these years it still puts  130gr winchester silvertips in about 1 1/4" and meat in the freezer.  If things go haywire, replace the scope. That will ussually fix the problem. Be careful though, once the rifle bug bites your finances may suffer!!  ;D

A little more than 30 years ago I bought a "package" gun from my local gun shop and it shoots as well today as the day I bought it....which is excellent by the way.  I suppose it's what you like or want.  I wanted a pump action rifle, the rest was candy.  The package was a Remington 760 30-06 with a Kassnar 3x9 scope (never heard of it but was assured it was good).  Hard plastic case and a sling. I've hunted with it vertually every year in all sorts of weather and many kills.  Point of aim never changed and will shoot 1.5 in groups all day long at 100 yds.

If you are a tinkerer or have special preferences as far as scopes and whatnot you probably won't be happy with the package.  Back when I bought mine fianances were tight and this setup just squeezed into the budget. ;)

my first rifle i got was about 9 years ago when i was 12 for christmas. it was a savage 110 package gun in 30-06 with a simmons 3-9 on it and 2 boxes of 165 gr ammo. a older fellow of the family taught me how to shoot and we took that out and after we got it sighted in i was shooting 1inch groups with it. i believe for a first rifle, or a quick replace or even if you cant afford something better then you cant beat the savage package rifle.i have owned 8 other deer rifles that i can think of but only 2 of them are still in my cabinet, one being a remington 700 mountain rifle, and the other....that same savage 110 wearing the same scope!
