Ruger Target or Savage Varmint

I am going to get a new 22-250 I was thinking about a Weatherby but dont like the fact of it being made outside of the U.S. So I was looking at either the Ruger M77 Target MKII or the Savage Varmint 12 BVSS. The specs are pretty much the same except the Savage has a 1in12 twist and the except has a 1in14. The Ruger is blued and the Savage is stainless the price is about the same. Any info any body has on either of these guns would greatly be appreciated. Is there really that big of a difference in the twist on the two guns???

I have no experience with the 22-250, but I had both rifles in other chamberings. In my opinion both are nice guns. The Ruger has a very solid receiver. Another nice feature is it comes with some pretty decent scope rings that attach directly to grooves machined on the receiver. No need for separate bases. But the trigger was a little heavy for my taste.
I don't have anything bad to say about the savage BVSS. It was my first rifle with the accu-trigger and I loved it. Very good for a factory trigger.
I always got better groups with the Savage than the Ruger. But maybe the reason was that I liked the Savage better, so I shot it much more often. The better trigger probably played a role as well.

Thanks for the reply Marc, I have a Ruger M77 MKII in 6mm REM, I like it alot!! I have no Savage though. But have heard nothing but good about them!! I am looking for the best accuracy, I reload alot. Right now I got H&R Ultra Varmint in 22-250 that I cant get to shoot worth a darn, anything!! IT SUCKS. I am not saying all H&R rifles are bad, I'm just saying mine sucks!!! I want to trade it in and get something that will shoot. The H&R wont even stabilize a 55 grain Nosler BT. Or a 50 grain V-MAX. It does look pretty sweet though!!!! I have a question about the scope rings that come with the Ruger. What size rings come with the gun and will a 44mm scope bell fit, the scope has an adjustable objective on it? I would put the scope on my 6mm but dont want to have to reset the zero when I put it back on!! THANKS

I don't have the Ruger anymore. I'm certain it came with 1" diameter scope rings, but not sure about the height. I'd say they were medium height. The scope I had on it had a 40mm adjustable objective, and there was some clearance between the objective bell and the barrel. But I can't say if a 44mm objective would have fit. In case the rings that come with the rifle are not high enough for the scope you want to use, I believe you can get aftermarket rings for your Ruger.

I still have the Savage 12 BVSS in 223 with 1:9 twist. It shoots the 50 V-Max bullets very well. The version in 22-250 has a 1:12 twist which in theory should work great with the bullets you mentioned or lighter. Back to your original question, if your planning on shooting 50 and 55gr bullets in a 22-250, I don't think that 1:12 or 1:14 twist would make a difference. Both would be enough to stabilize those bullets specially at 22-250 velocities. But please note I don't have first hand experience with the 22-250.

Both are very good rifles and ether would serve you well. I personally would give the nod to the Savage for 2 reasons. With the 1 in 12 twist you will be able to shoot heavier bullets with better accuracy and the stainless take a little less care. The Savage has 1 other big advantage in that you can change barrels on it yourself, if you have just a little mechanical ability.
