For an accurate 223 that would permit walking around or casual target I would make 2 suggestions.  First if your budget can do it a Browning  A bolt with a BOSS to allow tuning it up - or a savage.   Dosn't sound like you need or want a heavy barrel.    Savage is a great budget buy and more versital since you can do barrel changes and up grades.  I own a Browning with a Boss and it is the most consistenly accurate gun I have ever oowned.  Good luck

CK, you will get alot of ansewrs that differ on this.  From this crowed you are looking at a Tikka, a Howa, or a Savage.  Any of these will save you mad money vs. the browning and while I won't say all will out shoot the Browning, I would have to at the range to see it if some one said they would not.  Savage gets hit hard for the sloppy bolt, but i never met one that would not shoot MOA.  I actually believe that all 4 Savages that I have shot in some type of .22 cal all shot .5 MOAor less,  one honestly shot .25 over and over and over.  I hear the Tikka's and Howa's are the same way.
AMMO...

cknight98 :  I guess it has already been said but I have 2 different 223 cal. rifles and the howa has become my go to rifle when using that cal. I should sell the other but I find it had to part with guns and the house has lots of room so until I run out of room I will keep collecting, anyhow see if you can get your hands on a howa you might be impressed and the $$ you save can be used for ammo or other stuff. :D   JIM

cknight98, I go along with the the other posts, get a Tikka, Howa or Savage and you can't go wrong.  All three are excellent rifles for the money or for that fact any money.  They will shoot and thats the name of the game.  I would say that Howa or Savage has the edge on the Tikka only because their our more aftermarket add on's for them, such as stocks, etc.

Just besure you don't go cheap when you put a scope on one of them, either Nikon Monarach, Bushnell Elite 4200 or Burris scopes.
